Sets Summer Series
The YWCA-Uptown Cen
ter is presenting a summer
series for public education.
According to Terry M.
Hogan, the center director,
“a wide variety of topics
will be presented and dis
cussed.” Admission for the
series is free. However,
reservations are required.
Registration for the sum
mer series will be held until
noon of the day the work
shop takes place. Ms.
Hogan emphasized the
minimum enrollment must
be met for each workshop,
or it will be cancelled.

July 12: “Rape Against
Our Will.” This book
written by Susan Brown
Miller will be facilitated by
Sherry Lott, a volunteer
coordinator with the Rape

book or specific statistics
that interest you, Ms. Lott

tation (NCDOT) plans to

meeting on June 14.
The informal open-forum
meeting runs from 1 to 6
p.m. in the J.T. Williams
High School Media Center
located at 2400 Carmine
Street in Charlotte.
NCDOT representatives
will be at the meeting to
discuss the proposed pro
ject which is included in the
department’s 1984-1993
Transportation (TIP).
The proposed project
calls for Statesville Avenue
to be widened from New
land Road to 1-85.
Construction of the eight
tenths-mile project is
expected to start in fiscal
year 1986 and according to
information contained in
the TIP will cost about $1.5
. million.
The public is invited to
attend, ask questions,
make comments,
suggestions or recommen
dations pertaining to the
project.

Starting Friday, June 15,
Fourty Street and Ran
dolph Road between
Independence Boulevard
and Laurel Avenue will be
repaved. Traffic will be
maintained during the pro
ject.
Before paving begins,
excess asphalt will be
removed from the street
gutters to provide better
drainage and a more com
fortable ride. This work
will be performed starting
June 18 and will continue
during the weekend.
Following this work, all
manhole covers will be
raised on the one mile
portion of Fourth Street
and Randolph Road.
Resurfacing will follow and

The 854,000 project is
coordinated by the City’s
Street Maintenance
Division . Moot of the money

ment in presenting this
lecture, film and discussion
on how to ward off would
be attackers. The follow-up
to this presentation is a 9
hour course that can be
offered if there is adequate,
interest. Maximum enroll

p.m.)
July 17 and July 21 : “The
Hidden Room.” A puppet
show about a 9-year-old
whose dreams become
reality for her through
reading books. Come and
watch stories come to life
with child size puppets.
Discussion between pup
pets and audience follows
each presentation. Suitable
for children K-7th grade.

School teachers who
want to learn more about
the geology and the geolo
gic history of Piedmont
North Carolina will have an
opportunity at a workshop
June 25-29 at the University
of North Carolina at Char
lotte, funded by an $8,600
grant from the Martin
Marietta Company,
The program is
specifically designed for
teachers who in 1984-85 will
be teaching general
science courses which
include earth science as
well as life and physical
science topics.
Opportunities will be pro
vided to study the Carolina
Slate Belt and the Charlotte
Belt geologic formations
and to visit quarries in
Charlotte and Monroe
Water resources and their
management will also be
studied.
Faculty will be Dr. Gail |
Gibson and Dr. Don Steila
of the UNCC Department of
Geography and Earth
Sciences, assisted by Steve
Teeter.
