All-Star Baseball Team To Compete In Tournament A lineup of the fop base ball players in the Char lotte area has been put together to compete in the National Furniture City Invitational Tournament, starting Friday, August 3 in Lenoir. The double elimination tournament will continue through August 12 where the annual championship team will be announced. The Local team will represent the best athletes in the popular Triple County Baseball League under the management of Herman Thomas, the highly-successful skipper of the Queen City Rangers. Willie Alexander, manager of the Metro Phillies, and David Broome, who heads the Charlotte Redbirds, will serve as the coaches. “We have chosen a squad of players that we believe will be representative of our league as well as competitive in a field made up of some of the most outstanding teams in semi pro baseball,’’ Thomas said. Thomas faces a tough decision in reducing the recently appointed squad of 25 players down to the 21 players the tournament required. “It’s a very difficult decision to make,” Alex ander stated, adding "how ever, we have scheduled some exhibition games and Herman Thomas . .To manage All-Stars the players will be given an opportunity to show what they can do. They will cut themselves.” The 25-man squad is composed of two catchers, two first basemen, two second basemen, three short stops, three third basemen, two left fielders, three center fielders, three right fielders and five pitchers. Catchers Sam Williams of the Charlotte Red Birds and Randy Pack of the Hoskins Giants were named to the squad as were first basemen Terry Hollyfield of Kings Mountain and Melvin Latta of the Charlotte Bombers; second basemen Ricky Grier of the Rangers and Alfred Thompson of the Metro Phillies; short stops Wilbert Taylor of the Red Birds, Marcus Velesquez of the Rangers and Randy Falls of the Phillies; third basemen - Larry Dye of Bowling Green, Patrick Robinson of the Phillies and Bob White of the Ran gers; left fielders Darryl Berry of the Rangers and Ricky Carelock of the Phillies; center fielders Bobby Thompson of the Rangers, Darryl McCauley of the Red Birds and Grover Rovens of Hoskins; Michael Smith of the Phillies, Tim Funderburke of the Rangers and Ken Cuthbertson of the Rangers are the right fielders. The pitchers are Darryl Jackson of the Rangers, Mark Roberts and Archie Morris of the Phillies, James Young of the Bombers and Larry Henderson of the Red Birds. Morris has posted a 3-0 record this season. Jackson is 3-1 for the year and Roberts and Henderson each has 2-1 records. The Phillies will tune up for the tournament with contests to be played on weekends, beginning Friday night June 22 and continuing through July 27. Local games will be played at West Mecklenburg High School athletic field. Here Saturday Night Triple County League Will Stage Its All-Star Game ______ The popular Triple Coun ty Baseball League will stage its 18th annual All Star Contest Saturday night at Harding High School athletic field. The contest, which oeg.r.s at 8 o’clock, matches the North All Stars against the South All Stars. Herman Thomas will manage the norther ners and Willie Alexander will serve as the manager of the southerners. Thomas will be assisted by coaches Harry Morrow, manager pf the Hoskins Giants, and Willie Morrow, the West side Eagles top decision maker. The two were selected by fellow teammates, according to Bulldog head coach Bill Davis. Myles Darling, a senior of Waynesboro, will captain the 1984 defensive unit, while Sylvester native Johnoson Crutchfield will captain the Bulldog offensive for the second straight year. Darling, a 6-3, 200 defensive back, was in on 58 tackles last season and was second in interceptions for S.C. State with three.
