All-Star Baseball Team To
Compete In Tournament
A lineup of the fop base
ball players in the Char
lotte area has been put
together to compete in the
National Furniture City
Invitational Tournament,
starting Friday, August 3
in Lenoir.
The double elimination
tournament will continue
through August 12 where
the annual championship
team will be announced.
The Local team will
represent the best athletes
in the popular Triple
County Baseball League
under the management of
Herman Thomas, the
highly-successful skipper
of the Queen City Rangers.
Willie Alexander, manager
of the Metro Phillies, and
David Broome, who heads
the Charlotte Redbirds,
will serve as the coaches.
“We have chosen a squad
of players that we believe
will be representative of
our league as well as
competitive in a field made
up of some of the most
outstanding teams in semi
pro baseball,’’ Thomas
said.
Thomas faces a tough
decision in reducing the
recently appointed squad
of 25 players down to the 21
players the tournament
required.
“It’s a very difficult
decision to make,” Alex
ander stated, adding "how
ever, we have scheduled
some exhibition games and
Herman Thomas
. .To manage All-Stars
the players will be given an
opportunity to show what
they can do. They will cut
themselves.”
The 25-man squad is
composed of two catchers,
two first basemen, two
second basemen, three
short stops, three third
basemen, two left fielders,
three center fielders, three
right fielders and five
pitchers.
Catchers Sam Williams
of the Charlotte Red Birds
and Randy Pack of the
Hoskins Giants were
named to the squad as were
first basemen Terry
Hollyfield of Kings
Mountain and Melvin Latta
of the Charlotte Bombers;
second basemen Ricky
Grier of the Rangers and
Alfred Thompson of the
Metro Phillies; short stops
Wilbert Taylor of the Red
Birds, Marcus Velesquez of
the Rangers and Randy
Falls of the Phillies; third
basemen - Larry Dye of
Bowling Green, Patrick
Robinson of the Phillies
and Bob White of the Ran
gers; left fielders Darryl
Berry of the Rangers and
Ricky Carelock of the
Phillies; center fielders
Bobby Thompson of the
Rangers, Darryl McCauley
of the Red Birds and
Grover Rovens of Hoskins;
Michael Smith of the
Phillies, Tim Funderburke
of the Rangers and Ken
Cuthbertson of the Rangers
are the right fielders.
The pitchers are Darryl
Jackson of the Rangers,
Mark Roberts and Archie
Morris of the Phillies,
James Young of the
Bombers and Larry
Henderson of the Red
Birds.
Morris has posted a 3-0
record this season. Jackson
is 3-1 for the year and
Roberts and Henderson
each has 2-1 records.
The Phillies will tune up
for the tournament with
contests to be played on
weekends, beginning
Friday night June 22 and
continuing through July 27.
Local games will be played
at West Mecklenburg High
School athletic field.
