Rachel Fesmire, director of the North Ca rolina Department of Hu man Resources’ Office of Day Care Services, has some recommendations for choosing good day care centers as well as some signs of possible neglect or abuse. Day care facilities in North Carolina must be licensed by the state, and parents should check to see that their licenses are cur rent. Parents should also: -ensure that employees are qualified and have had lengthy experience. Pa - - . * _ rents should be wary of a center that has a frequent turnover of employees, es pecially if the center has been in operation for a long time; -discuss the forms of dis cipline that are used. Talk with the staff about their attitudes on discipline; -observe the number of staff members. The lower the staff-child ratio is, the better the supervision and instruction will be for the children; -talk to other parents who use the center. Ask the operators for references; -make sure that facili ties can fulfill your child’s special needs such as toi let training, diapers, spe cial allergies, etc.; -ask to see tne napping area to make sure that each child has his own mat or linens and be sure that the children are watched while they nap; --discuss the center’s teaching techniques to en sure that they meet your expectations. In addition to following all of these steps in se lecting a good day care center, parents also should be aware of how to recog nize possible neglect. Fesmire says the most important thing parents can uu i» to believe the children. u parents suspect that a child is being abused or neglected they should re port it immediately to their county social services de partment. While under in vestigation, the report will be confidential.
