Spends $1J5 Million
East Coast Music Lovers
Overflow Hampton Coliseum
By Karen Parker

At least 10,000 people
filled the Hampton Coli
seum, each night, June.
22-24, for the 17th annual
KOOL Jazz Festival.
A caravan of cars and
charter buses along the
seaport’s thoroughfare in
. dicated music lovers all
along the East Coast were
in Hampton, VA. Regard
less of the miles driven, the
trip had to be worth
while. It was equally ob
vious the entertainers were
glad to be a part of the
festival. They all .said it
and proved it with their
exuberance.
The ecstasy of delight
between the audience and
the entertainers went past
midnight Friday and Satur
day, even though the first
show began at 7:30 p.m.
Sunday had little variance,
the first act started r
promptly at 3 p.m., and the
excitement carried
through until 9:30 p.m.
Three sellouts du&Tonly
make the entertainers hap
py, Hampton merchants
And officials were excited
as well. According to Co
liseum manager, Andy
Green well, a total of about
$1.5 million was collected
in the city in a three
day period.
The Pointer Sister* were among outstanding en
tertainers who made the 1*84 KOOL Jaxs Festival one
of the more popular concerto in its 27-year-history. Left
to right: June, Rath and Anita electrified their
audience with “Automatic” and “Fire.”
Exceptional planning
had to be the root of suc
cess. When festival pro
ducers can book all-stars
like Gladys Knight & the
Pips, A1 Jarreau, Patti
La Belle, B. B. King, Les
McCann, Stanley Turren
tine, Shirley Scott, David
Sanborn, Pointer Sisters,
Bob James, Tania Marie,
and Pieces of a Dream all
in one weekend, they’ve
undoubtedly spelled
SUCCESS with capital let
ters. .
George Wein, head of
Festival Productions pro
duces the KOOL Jazz Fes
tival. He commented, “You
have to make the event,,
festival-like. You have ttr
make it a celebration.’’
whether the fejttval at- .
tendants enjoyed jazz, soul,
or blues, there was a
healthy dose of each to
satisfy everyone’s taste.
The weekend extravaganza
was certainly superb in
terms of entertainment and
a fantastically lively and
appreciative audience.
Look forward to next
year's KOOL Jazz No. 18.
As spokespeople stated
often during the three con
certs, the festival in the
future can only get bigger
and better. - -?—-—-•
