Mike Gerald .Receives promotion Gerald To Manage Western North Carolina District Allstate Insurance Company has named Mike Gerald Territorial Underwriting Manager for Western North Carolina. Gerald previously held the position of North Carolina Account Underwriter and spent the past six months in Allstate’s Manpower Development Program. Gerald is a 1972 graduate of West Mecklenburg High School and a 1976 graduate of Winston-Salem State University; he is the son of Helen Gerald of Charlotte. Gerald will manage his district from the Regional Office in Charlotte. Mike and his wife Pam and daughter Cherne will reside in Charlotte. Writing Project' A special three-week institute is being planned in July by the Univer sity of North Carolina at Charlotte Writing Project. The course will meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, July 9-26, in 2066 Colvard Building on the UNCC campus. Presented by the UNCC Department of English and the Office of Continuing Education and Extension, the institute is designed to expand the participant’s knowledge of writing and the teaching of writing. Available for graduate or under graduate credit, the course will be taught by Dr. Rebecca Devet, who participated in the first UNCC Writing Project. She is currently poet-in-residence and poetry resource teacher with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. The cost is $135. Literacy Project Central Piedmont Community College’s ABLE Center is growing. Beginning this month, the free program for teaching math and reading to adults will open centers in the Double Oaks and the Plaza Midwood communities. The present ABLE Center is at Freedom Mall. To make these two new Centers a real neighborhood effort, ABLE is looking for volunteers to work as tutors, computer assistants or clerical assistants. If you can invest a little time each week in the worthwhile project of helping people learn to read, come to ABLE’s training workshop for volunteers July 18 from 6-9 p.m. at the Double Oaks Community Service Center off Statesville Avenue or July 21 at the Plaza-Midwood area Holy Trinity Lutheran Church from 1-5 p.m. Your help is needed at the ABLE Center. For more information about volunteering to work with those who want to learn to read, call Jocelyn Dienst at 373-9715 July Experience During the month of July, 89 rising high school seniors will get a preview of college life while attending Davidson College’s "July Experience." Young people from 15 states will participate in the educational and social program for gifted and talented students July 1-Z7. This year's program boasts the largest number of participants since "July Experience” made its debut in 1978.
