For Gladys Adams, ihe Attitude Is Essential” By Teresa Simmons Post Managing Editor Sixteen years ago Gladys Adams was fresh out of high school. a superb stenographer and assum ing her first responsibili ties as an employee at IBM. Today Ms. Adams is in management - a result of company and employees working together. What is the key to climb ing the “ladder of suc cess?” For Ms. Adams the right attitude is essential. “It’s the drive to do your current job better than anyone else. In turn, this demonstrates your ability to accept additional re sponsibility,” Ms. Adams commented. If your job is not exactly what you prefer, Ms. Adams suggests that your performance should still be exceptional. “You may not be in the job you like today, but you will have to do that job well in order to go to the next step or level" A good worker, Ms. Adams^ continued, is one who is'flexible, ins also important to know your strengths and weaknesses You should be willing to spend time improving your weaknesses and building upon your strengths . ” Ms. Adams gives much credit to the IBM company in terms of her manage ment training. “IBM al lowed me to grow from within. She often finds herself working overtime. “I want to make sure I learn every aspect of the job." Previously she was Project Manager with about one-third of the em ployees under^ her juris diction. With several depart ments to contend with Ms. Adams finds the roughest part of her job is "Trying to please all the people all the time." Under her manage ment, to name a few, is secretarial training: sta tionary supplies, document support, receptionist and secretaries, the cafeteria and more. “The managers in each department effectively uti lize employees' skills and people are usually in jobs they want,” she continued. If Ms. Adams could change one thing about her career so far it would be the completion of her de greefrom college. “I have attended junior college and I intend to complete my BA. If I could do anything differently I would have — finished my degree earlier in my career. I sense that it is a rough market to compete in, yet it (not having a degree) has not been a drawback to me. But I do intend to complete my BA, probably in busi ness management and psy chology - it’s a personal goal." ■Bom in Laytonville, ML., Ms. Adams actually want ed to become an opera singer and secretary. While working for IBM she was transferred from'Vir - ginia to Charlotte. She attends Little Rock AME Zion Church; enjoys play Miss America Coed Pageant Seeks Teen Applicants If you enjoyed the at tention and excitement associated with the recent Miss America Pageant, and you’re a teenager, then here’s your chance to take your victory walk down a runway. Girls between the ages of 13 and 18 are already signing up for the Miss America Coed Pageant. The national pageant will be held August 8-14,1985 in Hawaii. Before you can compete in the national competi tion, however, you must be a state winner. The Miss America Coed state pa geant will be in Charlotte, June 14-16, 1985 at the Adam's Mark Hotel. It seems like a long way off btit there are a number 61" things you should do now to enter the contest. Start by writing for an application and pageant in formation. If you prefer, telephone 904-432-9698 The state winner will receive a cash award and an all-expense paid “Dream Vacation” to Ho nolulu for the national pageant. A talent contest (not required) will be held Friday of the pageant weekend for interested contestants.
