victory would send Elizabeth City zooming up the ladder of
respect as a serious challenger for the Northern Division
championship. The Spartans will have something to prove,

attack this winter. Both are highly-touted freshmen Each

Coach Jim Oliver of Alabama State, who fielded one of "
the best college basketball teams in the country last
winter, has plucked two of Detroit’s most prized athletes
from his competitors. Oliver has signed Chris Jones and
Duane Marcelis to grants-in-aid. Both are said to be great
outside shooters.
JDP Sports of Dallas reportedly lost $4 million when the
Larry Holmes- Gerrie Coetzee heavyweight bout was
postponed. Experts now say the fight will be staged in
November, if ever. A high school quarterback from
Dearborn Height, Mich.,who threwfor 1,337 yards and 12
touchdowns a year ago, has signed with Alabama State He
could be the “steal” of the year!
Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman have apparently
settled their differences. The bitter rivals will resume
relationship on the gridiron in 1985. The series was
discontinued in 1982 after the schools could not agree on a

moment, neither the Panthers nor the Eagles are in
serious contention. Winston-Salem is atop the Southern
Division and Elizabeth City and Norfolk State are tied for
the Northern Division lead. My pick, Livingstone, is
currently resting at the bottom in the Southern Division

Golden Bulls Host Bowie
State Saturday Night

Johnson C. Smith’s football team
had a week off to recover from its 0-2
start and will face life anew against
Bowie State Saturday night at
Charlotte Memorial Stadium. Kick
off is at 7:30 p.m.
The Golden Bulls own a three
game win streak over the Bulldogs
since Bowie State joined the CIAA in
1981 John Organ’s team has given
Smith fits the last two years,
losing 7-0 and 42-45 The Bulls scored
three touchdowns in the final five
minutes last year to pull out the win.
The Bulldogs are out to break
Smith’s mastery over them and
stand a chance for two reasons
Bowie State loves to throw the ball,
led by veteran quarterback Fran
Stevens who has ranked among the
CIAA passing leaders the past two
years. The Bulls' secondary has yet
to snare its first interception.
The second.reason. And one that
JCSU coach Horace Small expects to
end Saturday, is Smith's failure at
getting the ball into the end zone
‘Our line-up is dominated by
freshmen and sophomores so we are
expecting improvement as we go
along," noted Small. “Right now
we re concerned with establishing a
consistent effort."
The Bulls' offense has been
bottled up and is due to break out of

hope to boost the Bulls’ attack in their first starts of the
