Ruben Hint* >. ...Male Teacher of Year Ruben L. Hines Selected For NEH— Grant Ruben L. Hines, an instructor of History and Political Science at Johnson C. Smith University the past eight years, has been awarded a $20,878 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to pursue doctoral studies. Hines has previously been select ed by vote of the student body as ' Teacher of the Year” at JCSUTHe is a popular community and church speaker. Last February, Hines addressed the annual Black History Month Convocation on campus with a well-received speech entitled . _ , “Black Achievement: The Ingredi ~ents for Success:” Ruben Hines is a man of mani fold skills. For years he's served as_ an unofficial campus poet of the JCSU News, prodding students to ward higher achievement, greater self-awareness and pride. Hines is also the measure of ability with a cue stick for any student with thoughts of taking the annual billiards tournament title. “It Is a distinct hooor to receive such an award from an organiza tion as prestigious as the National Endowment for the Humanities,” noted JCSU President Robert L. Albright “I’m Just thrilled as can be,” related Hines. “I’m grateful the NEH thought enough of my cre dentials to allow me to complete work on my doctorate.” Hines has previously earned SO hours towards his Ph D. He will be leaving in August 1985, to study at UNC-Chapel Hill. “I plan to finish in one year which several people have suggested may be too ambitious,” stated Hines. “But we had a saying in the ser vice, ‘The impassible we do right away, miracles take a little longer.” Hack Heritage Week The week of October 1-7 has been designated Black Heritage Week at Appalachian State University, with this year’s theme being “Where Do We Go From Here?” Sponsored by the Black Student Association, the week bolds many exciting events, including a piKitr. display each day from 10 a.m. til 3 p.m. in the Plemmons Student Unkm lobby on the ASU campus in Boone. Tuesday night, October a, there will be a speaker in Our House of the Plemmons Student Union at 8 p.m., while the rousing film based on the Broadway musical, "The Wlz,” will be shown in the I.G. Greer Cine ma at 7 p.m. Wednesday night. Men’s Service Club is sponsoring its fall semester Variety Show, to be held Friday, October 5, at 8 p.m. in Our House. The week’s activities conclude with “Say Amen, Some body,” an historical gospel to be shown at 7 p.m. in the I.G. Greer Cinema on Sunday night. Admission to all events is free. The public is invited to come out and see where we me going from here!
