State University Has Long i “Fayetteville State Uni versity” is the most recent name given to an institu tion with . long and in (creating history. A multi campus Uniyersity with its main campus located on Murchison Road in Fay etteville, North Carolina FSU had its genesis in the Howard School in 1867. By a legislative act of 1877, the North Carolina Genera] Assembly pro vided for the establishment of a Normal School for the education of Negro teach ers. The Howard School was chosen as the moat promising because of its successful record during the previous ten years. It was designated a teacher training institution and its name was changed to the State Colored Normal School. Throughout its early history, the original purpose of the school had been its chief function - the training of elementary school teachers. Later, both the name and the purpose of the institution were changed to meet the educational needs of students desiring careers • other than tea china. In 1969, the institution acquired its present name - Fayetteville State Univer sity - and Dr. Charles A. Lyons, Jr. was elected President of the newly designated “regional Diversity. ” In mj, Fayetteville State Univer sity became a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina. As . directed by the Board of Governors, Fayetteville State is now moving toward becoming a comprehensive University during the next bienium. Fayetteville State Uni versity has made great progress since its inception in both programs and facil ities. No longer exclusively a teacher training institu tion, FSU now offers the Bachelor of Arts Degree in ten (10) disciplines; and the Master’s Degree in four disciplines including a new Master’s Degree Program in Business Administra tion. The institution’s facilit ies have also been greatly improved. From a one building school 117 years ago, Fayetteville State Uni versity has grown to a campus of 156 acres and 36 buildings with a current value of over $35 million. The University is continuing to (is facilities. A new ultramodern Science Com plex and an addition to the ‘ Administration building have been recently com- - pleted. The Center for Continuing Education building represents a part * of the first private philan thropic grant of over one million dollars to the Uni versity given by the Kel logg Foundation. Plans are now being finalized to con struct a new library that will provide stacking space for over 350,000 volumes and meet the needs of the University for some years to come. In addition to physical facilities, the quality of the faculty is an area in which there has been steady im provement. During the administration of Dr. Ly ons, the number of faculty with doctorate degrees has increased from 25 percent to 75 percent. Academical ly, FSU seeks to provide an atmosphere that encour ages intellectual creativity -and rewards outstanding scholarship by providit« excellent graduate and un dergraduate programs.
