Samuel L. Mills ..Retired AkP Employee Surprise Retirement Dinner Honors Samuel Milk Mr. Samuel L. Mills, upon retiring from A&P Stores after approxi mately 40 years of employment, was honored by more than 200 guests during a surprise retirement dinner held in the Fellowship Hall of the United House of Prayer, 2321 Beat ties Ford Rd. in Charlotte. Special guests included: Apostle and Mrs. - H. Swaringer, Apostile and Mrs. D. Styles, Apostle and Mrs. C.B. Gib son, Apostle and Mrs. C. Taylor, Rev. and Mrs. C. Kerns, Mr. and Mrs. James K. Polk, Sr., Mrs. Dorothy R. Stinson, Mr. and Mrs. > John F. McClure, Elder and Mrs. James Guy, and Mrs. Nancy Mills, age 83, mother of Mr. Mills. Mr. Mills was born in Great Falls, South Carolina. His parents moved to Charlotte during his early child hood. He attended Charlotte Public Schools and graduated from Pine ville High School _ in 1941. After graduation, Mills ' was employed with the Providence Road AltP Store. He worked as a bag boy until he was inducted into the United States Army and served his country during World War II. He received an honorable discharge, with many decorations and citations, including the Purple Heart Medal in IM& Following his discharge, Mills resumed employment with A4tP Stores. He continued as a bag boy until his transfer to the North Tryon Street AfcP where he became one of the first black cashiers in the Charlotte area. He worked in this position until 1963 when he was transferred to West Trade Street AJkP and became the first black Produce Manager in the A*P Southern District. Mr. Mills has worked faithfully in practically every A&P Store in the Southern District. According to his wife, Elventa, Mr. Mills has not missed ©ver^hirty days during his entire employment with AAP Stores. In addition to his employment, Mr. Mills once served as Pastor of the former Greenville Mission House of Prayer in Matthews, North Caro lina. He was ordained into the ministry under the leadership of the late Bishop C.M. Grace, Under the leadership of the Most Honorable Bishop W. McCoUugh, Mr. Mills served as the former Assistant Pastor of the Charlotte Mother House of Prayer. He was the former Pastor of the United House of Prayer in Gastonia, North Carolina. He became Honorary Pastor in 1976, and an ordained Apostle in 1964. Presently, Mr. Mils is very active in his church, the Charlotte Mother House of Prayer, where he serves as the President of Presidents.' He-and his wife reside at 320 Gene Avenue, Charlotte, North Carolina. They have one son, Samuel L. Mills, Jr. and one grandson, Del-Kenyon, age 13.
