Win thro p To Present Salute To Dr. King ROCK HILL- A Film Tribute to Martin Luther King will be presented by film maker Richard Kap lan at 7 p.m. March 4 at Wlnthrop College’s Tillman Auditorium. The presen tat tk>n will be open to the public at no charge. “King: A Filmed Re cord, Montgomery to Memphis’’ will be shown following remarks by Kap lan, associate producer and director of the documen tary. Chronicling the straggle for equality and justice from 1955 to 1968, the do cumentary shows the events as they occurred, without editorializing, through actual newsreel and television film footage. Dr. King’s unforgettable prose is re-experienced in his sermons, “I Have a Dream,” and “I Have Been to the Mountain Top,” in his “Letter from Birming ham Jail,” and in his speeches decrying bigotry and in opposition to war. The music of the civil rights marchers provides the soundtrack for much of the film, as well as the voices of such artist as Mahalia Jackson and Odetta. There is no narration; instead, the episodes are bridged with reading from the Bible, Langston Hughes and other sources by an array of distinguished actors. Kaplan’s film about King was nominated for an Aca demy Award as best docu mentary in 1970. Other films of the writer-produ cer-director include “The Eleanor Roosevelt Story,” which won an Oscar, and “A Look at Liv,” a feature length portrait of actress Liv Ullmann. In addition to his film and television career, Kaplan has worked as a journalist and foreign correspondent and an actor and director in both radio and theater. A graduate of Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, Kaplan has taught at various colleges and uni versities including the Uni versity of Southern Cali fornia, the University of Maryland and the Pratt Institute of Design.
