Wilbert H. Ferguson ..Former commander-in-chief Wilbert H. Ferguson Scholarship Established By Jalyne Strong Poat Staff Writer The Scottish Rite Masons, of Char lotte Consistory No. 35 PHA, begdn the Wilbert H. Ferguson Scholarship Program, designed to assist college bound youths, in January 1965. Each member of the Fraternal Order has donated funds to the program. The first scholarships will be awarded in March 1965. The Scottish Rite Masons predict they will raise an endowment of $20,000 in the next ten years. Wilbert H. Ferguson, for whom the scholarship is named, served as Commander-In-Chief of Charlotte Consistory No. 35 PHA from 1972 until 1963. Ferguson, of 1704 Russell Avenue, was a painter-contractor at Johnson C. Smith University until his retirement in 1964. He conceived the idea of initiating a fraternity scholarship after work ing for several years with the United Negro College Fund through JCSU. Ferguson saw that “many youths are unable to attend college because they are financially disad vantaged.” The Scottish Rite Masons feel their scholarship program especial ly aids those youths who can not meet requirements necessary to receive financial aid from educa tional institutions. ». To meet the eligibility criteria for the Wilbert H. Ferguson Scholar ship, applicants must be between the ages of 17 to 25, related to a member of the Fraternal Order, and already accepted by a college or i university. There are no income requirements needed for the Ferguson scholar ship. Applicants need only to send a letter to Charlotte Consistory No. 35 naiH receive tTschohn^ . if criteria is met,” states ';Bugene Marsh, spokesman for the Scottish Rite Masons. Ihe^Wilbert H. Fegruson Scholar ship Program is managed by Wa chovia Bank under the Scholastic Trust Fund. Interested persons may write to Charlotte Consistory No. 35, Prince Hall Affiliation, P.O. Box 16645 Charlotte, North Carolina 28216. Application deadline is January 15 of each year. Scholarships are awarded in March. Tom Morrison ' .
