Vandnoss Commissions Visual Artist Alee Yes, it’s true that all of us have our own peculiarities. But not all of us have the money in which to visually atpMt^tttM. The point Ti* getting to is that Lu ther Vandross, who has long admitted a true admi ration for Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin and Diana Ross recently commis sioned songwriter and vi sual artist Alee Willis to do a rather “strange” piece of artwork for his wall. According to Vanckoes the painting will have Are tha, Dionne and Diana dressed to the nines, with minks, high beds and box ing gloves. No. that is not a misprint. Willis is to con struct this master piece so that it wUl move. At the completion of the project, Diana will knock dawn Di onne and a billboard chart will pop up with “Baby Love” at number ooe. And when Aretha knocks down Diana, up pope the chart with “Respect.” See what I mean about people and their peculiari ties? GRAMMYS FOOTNOTE ' Personally, I have al ways thought the Grammy Awards was a long drawn out affair and the latest edition did very little to alter that opinion. There was one segment of the *how; however, that really made me glad that I Cook the time to watch the pro duction and that was the tribute to the soul gospel category, hr those few' mtebtes, something incre IXHTtta dible happened. It was almost like Andrea Crouch said. No longer was the audience in the Shrine Auditorium, nor the television audience in their homes, but through the deep spirituality of the music, each person was in that little Baptist church down South. With Pop Stapleton leading the gospel excursion, Denice Williams took over with an outstand ing performance of “God Is Truly Amazing.” The Clark Sisters both over whelmed the audience with their physical appearance and abundance of talent and were later joined by Rev. James Cleveland and Hie Southern Community Mass Choir and Andrae Crouch himself. It was remarkable. Just a couple more comments about the lavish affair and I’m through. I was glad to see Tina Turner get the recognition she so well-deserved through the form of three Grammy Awards....And did you happen to notice that uncombed hair is the rage, especially Chaka Khan’s. She had so much hair that it would not even move. ASHFORD AND SIMPSON Everytime I hear this duet is coming to town I get excited. I’ve only had the opportunity to see them on two occasions and each time that I’ve seen them, I’ve vowed to see them upon their next concert to the city. Hiey’ll be here Saturday, March 16 at Ovens Auditorium and if I get my way, so will I. There’s a magic in seeing Ashford and Simpson perform. It’s a high level energy performance that takes off the moment the lights fade and stops only after the audience is upon its feet, begging for more. What’s their secret? Well, I don’t know that, but I do believe that they love what they’re doing and they love giving all they’ve got to the people who have -- I ... Ill given them the opportunity to express themselves creatively, plus they have -an honesty that can’t be dismissed as showman ship. But I’ll say no more. See it for yourself. STRANGE. BUT TRUE One day at lunchtime a co-worker and myself started talking about enter tainers and she remarked that both Little Richard and Prince are very similar. Well, that comment stayed with me and I have to admit that I had never thought about it. But just look at these facts: During Little Richard’s heyday, his music was considered radical, isn’t Prince’s? Look at the physical stature, the way the two dress and even the hairstyle of the two. There’s no denying that there is much common ground. Maybe History is indeed repeating itself? Another strange...but true is that the new singer. Eugene Wilder whose hit is “Gotta Get You Home With Me Tonight,’’ has an uncanny vocal resem blance to the late Marvin Gaye. When I first heard Wilder sing, it really spooked me. I knew that this was not Gaye, but I couldn't deny what I was bearing. And what made it so strange was that before Gaye’s death, I had never heard a performer that sounded so much like him before. RICHARD PRYOR It may seem like a long wait, but I know it will be a wait worth waiting for. Richard Pryor has started production for his newest Columbia Picture release, “Jo Jo Dancer.” Pryor will produce, direct and star in the film which is scheduled for Christmas 1985. The screenplay was written by Rocco Urbisci, Paul Mooney and Pryor. THE CHARLOTTE POST | NAVY. ITS NOT JUST A SNUFF, IT'S AN ADVENTURE.
