It recalls a demonstration of women textile and garment workers in New York City who, on March kS, 1857, walked off the job demanding better working conditions, more pay and an end to their 19-hour work day. Three years later they formed their own union. > Again, on Marchs, 1980, thousands of women from New York’s garment district walked off their Jobs, demanding better working con ditions, an end to child labor, and the right to vote. The gallant struggle for . equality led to the recognition of March 8th as International Women’s Day. It is observed throughout the world, on all continents, in rallies, demonstra tions, festivals and marches, honoring working women and their contribution to the struggle for Jobs, peace and equality. The weekend of activities is sponsored by the International Women’s Day Committee, a coalitoin of community and labor organisations, including the Charlotte Labor CouocU and several affiliated unions, the Charlotte Equal Rights Congress, the National Organisation for Women, with the cooperation of the American Friends Service Committee and the Women’s Studies Program at IINOC.
