The United States Tennis Association has awarded the
BATCH Racquet Association’s affiliate-the Southeastern
Junior Development Tennis Program-11,250 in seed
money to use for the development of a junior tennis
program.
On behalf of the United States Tennis Association, I am
pleased to inform you that your request for a USTA Seed
Money Grant has been approved,” said Lisa Schtflidt,
coordinator of community programs.
‘‘The United States Tennis Association is pleased to be of
assistance to the Southeastern Junior Development Tennis ‘
Program and we wish you a successful program.
The Southeastern Junior Development Tennis Program
is in its first year of operation.
Founded by myself, Bernard Reeves, Chuck Whitley,
James Brewer, and Wildred Mack of Charlotte; Sharon
Ross'and Jim Pender of Greensboro; Clarice Harring
ton and Emma Goodwin of Greenville, S.C.; Leon Kay and
Dee Dee Adams of Winston-Salem; and Charlotte Fergu
son and Mike Brumfield of Columbia. S.C. -
^Outstanding juniors who have evolved out of the BATCH
program in the Charlotte area are Dana Berry who played
at UNCC and Stan Law who is currently playing at
Gardner-Webb College.
Outstanding players on the high school teams are Eric
Abrams at East Mecklenburg, Keith Chisholm and Cicero
“Junior” McGill and Andre Sloan at North Mecklenburg y
and Devon Berry at West Charlotte. , .iy

were turned in by Tommy Funderburk of East Meck

At Carmel Country Club, Rodney Elams of South
Mecklenburg had a 70. Robbie Brevender of South had a 79
and Jeff Hoppe of South had an 80.
George Valashiuas of Independence had a 72. J.D.
Koontz of the Patriots had a 74.
Tom Padgett of Harding tore up the Pawtuckett Course
with a 76.
Garinger s Darrin Stinson shot a 78 at Eastwood. West
: Mecklenburg’s Rick Milligan had a 75 and teammate Steve
Sarlian had a 78 at Eastwood.

Myers Park’s Scott Morgan threw a three-hitter at
■ Garinger in a game that gave the conference’s best teams
a tie for first with seven wins and two losses at the halfway

Teammate Keith Kozlowski hit a three-run homer. i V
Morgan threw only 112 pitches.
Jamie Furr of Olympic boosted his record to-six wins
and no losses with an 8-0 shutout of the West Charlotte
Lions. He struck out nine in the process. Forest Kenly had
a double and two runs batted in for Olympic. Tony McRee
had a double, triple and three runs batted in for Olympic.
Greg Wilcox of South struck out 12 East batters when the
Sabres beat the Eagles in a 3-0 shutout.
Willie Campagna went two for four and scored twice as
the North Vikings squeaked by West Mecklenburg’s
Indians.

Cicero McGill beat Keith Bui, 6-0, 6-0, as North beat
Harding, 8-1.
Eric Abrams beat John Williams of West Charlotte as
the Eagles handed the Lions an 8-1 defeat. The score was
6-1, 8-3.
Brian Watt of West Charlotte lost a marathon to Mike
Webber of East by a 4-6, 6-2,6-4 count.

All Charlotte Post Basketball Player Byron Dinkins has
signed to play basketball at U^CC.
Dinkins averaged 25 points per game with long-range
shooting for the Eagles. Twice he scored 36 points in a
game.

Olympic’s Tara Swander slugged West Charlotte pitch
ing for a grand slam as she drove in six runs in Olympic’s
9-6 win over the Lions of West Charlotte.
The Lion’s Nichelle McKay went four for four with two
homerune and four runs batted in-for the Lions.

East Teammate Jane Stover had two and Laura Mar

Tennis Gives Chisholm
An Opportunity To Relax?

I started playing tennis,” said
Keith Chisholm, this week’s Char
lotte Post “Spring Sports Player of
the Week," "because it) gave me an
opportunity to relax and unwind
after a hard day of studying. I kept
playing it because 1 felt that a
person needs to be well-rounded to
be successful.”
Chisholm began playing tennis in
the eighth grade with the BATCH
Racquet Association.
He played during the summer for
the BATCH junior team in the South
eastern Racquet Association.
Two summers ago, he was named
to tlfe All-Southeastern Racquet
Association Junior, Tennis Team.
He played number six on the team

Tennis Tournament to be held April
27 in the Myers Park Tennis-Cen
ter in Concord.

singles; senior men (over 90);
senior women; men’s doubles; wo
men’s doubles; and junior singles
and doubles.
The entry fee is $20 for adult

a 4.76 Class Bank Index Average and
rank number three in a class of 400.
In a recent match with Harding
Chisholm defeated Volker Hansch
6-4, 6-3 as the Vikings won 8-1. He
then teamed with Cicero “Junior”
McGill to beat David Boas and
Donnie Parks 8-3 in a pro set match
for the number one doubles win.
