Hall Dedicated To Dr. Greenfield
On Friday, April 19, Johnson C.
Smith University formally dedicat
ed its one-year old New Residence
Hall to Dr. Wilbert Greenfield.
Greenfield was president of John
son C. Smith University from 1973
1983. He resigned January 1,1983 to
become president of Virginia State
University in Petersburg.
“From its inception, Johnson C.
Smith University has believed that
having a healthy balance of aca
demic study and comfortable liv
ing arrangements, will help stu
dents grow, mature as adults and
enter positions of responsibility in
our society,” cited Johnson C. Smith
University president Robert L. Al
bright. “This belief was a major
focus of Dr. Greenfield’s admin
istration. Will understood the im
portant connection between a piece
of land and a lofty goal.”
Mr. J. F. Day, representing The
Duke Endowment, congratulated
Dr. Greenfield and praised the uni
versity for having the insight to
undertake such a project.
The three-story, 220-student capa
city residence center was made pos
sible through a $2 million gift
from The Duke Endowment. Odell
Associates of Charlotte designed the
47,500 square foot - “Y” shaped
facility. The construction was done
by F. N. Thompson, Inc.
Dr. Matthew J. Whitehead, chair
man of the board of trustees for
Johnson C. Smith, also participated
in the ceremonies and said, ‘‘It is
appropriate, just and right that we
name this new residence hall after
Dr. Greenfield. Afterall, it is
through his dreams and determina
tion that we are here today."

Noted Artist To Host Talk And Au^:_raph Party

One of the most impressive young
writers to emerge on the literary
scene, Percival Everett, will host a
talk and autograph party at North
Branch Library, 2324 LaSalle St.,
Thursday, May 9, at 7:30 p.m.
Everett is the author of two
novels: “Sudar," and “Walk Me to
the Distance." His first book,
“Suder,” published in 1983, has been
praised as “highly original, excru
ciatingly funny, disorienting and
sad, but most of all Actively
daring," by the Boston Globe. Atlan
tic Monthly, United Press, The Los
Apgeles Times, and Philadelphia
Inquirer all have reviewed Everett’s
first novel with superlatives. How
ever, concerning his second book.
People magazine acclaims, “This
book is deeper and more serious."
And Bestsellers refers to his style of
writing as “lean and dean."
Everett grew up in Columbia, S.C.
He graduated from the University of
Miami, and did graduate work in
philosphy at the University of Ore
gon. He then attended the writing
program at Brown University and
received a master’s degree. He has
worked as a teacher, musician and
sheep-ranch hand. Everett is the son
of Mr. and Mrs. Perdval Everett of
Columbia, S.C., and the nephew of
Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Robinson of
Charlotte. He now lives in Port
land, Oregon, with his wife, Julie,
where he is writing a new novel.

Friends of the Public Library will
hold a champagne reception, ac
cording to Elizabeth Randolph,
chairman of the Library Board of
