Woman’* Day at New St. John
Baptist Church will be observed
Sunday, May 5, during two special
services. The 11 a.m. service will
feature as speaker Nettie Caldwell
The afternoon speaker will be
Carolyn Gardner. Both ladies are
members of the church who exhibit
the Christian mores evident in those
who love Christ.
Both Mrs. Caldwell and Mrs.
Gardner will speak on the theme
“Women Growing In the Knowledge
of Christ.”
Mrs. Caldwell, originally frrtfn
Hamlet, attended Livingstone
College and the University of
Rochester, N.Y. She has taught in
the Charlotte Mecklenburg School
System and at Central Piedmont
Community College. Presently she
is co-owner with her husband of the
Print Shack Printing Co.
At New St. John Baptist she is the
Christian Education Director. She is
also Drama Director for the General
Baptist Association.
Mrs. Caldwell says that the reason
she tithes ho- time to the Lord is
because of love. “I love the Lord. He
is first in my life. I know that God
has laid His hands on tne for a
special calling and I give Him the
praise, I want to contribute my
God-given talents to humanity.”
The choir from Mrs. Caldwell’s
home family church will be present
to render music Sunday morning at
NeW* St. John. The Ellerbe Grove
Baptist Church Youth Choir from
Rockingham will be on program.
The daughter of Rev. and Mrs.
Arise L. Covington, Mrs. Caldwell is
married to Harry J. Caldwell. They
have three children, Tina, Cornell
and Shelia
«-aroiyn Gardner will be the
speaker during the afternoon
program. She is a graduate of
Winston-Salem State Teacher's
College and earned her Master’s
degree from Ohio State University.
She is currently a teacher at
Northeast.
A capable person who believes in
excellence Mrs. Gardner is a Sunday
School teacher at New St. John and
works with the Young Adult
Missionary Group. She is also a
member of the Paradise Voices. She
is a quiet but serious person and
believes that whatever one seeks to
accomplish should be done right or
not at all.
A special invitation is extended to
all to support the Women's Day
Program at New St. John Baptist
Church. Rev. Robert Leak is pastor

John Rd. in the Newell Hickory

National President of the Church
Women United for 1984-85
quadrennium.

On May 19 the Chancellor Choir
will celebrate its anniversary. The
Charlotte Inter denominations!

beginning at 6 p.m.

The Children’s Choir of Walls
Memorial AME Zion Church will be
sponsoring a Gospel Song-a-Spring,
on Sunday, May 5, at 3 p.m. The
young Adult Choirs of St. Luke
Baptist Church, Parkwood C.M.E.
Church, Friendship Baptist Church,
and the Junior Combination Choir
have all been invited to participate.
The Children’s Choir is undo* the
direction of Henrico White and
Cheryl Givens. Rev. J.T. White is

The North Charlotte District
Ushers will celebrate their annual
Day with a “Minister of the Year”
contest, on Sunday, May 5, at 4 p.m.
at Clement Memorial AME Zion
Church on Newland Road, Charlotte.

Carrie Howard, district president.
GALILEAN
The Galilean Baptist Church will
be celebrating the third anniversary
of their pastor, Rev. Phil Davis.
Rev. Davis is one of Charlotte’s most
outstanding ministers of the Gospel.
In celebration, on Friday May 3, at
7:30 p.m. an appreciation concert
will be held at the Shiloh Institution
al Baptist Church, 2900 Greenland
Ave. The Victory Ensemble, record
ing artists from Cincinnati, Ohio,
and the J.A. White Gospel Choir
will be featured.
On Sunday, May 5, the celebration
continues at 3 p.m. with the
anniversary services at Galilean
Baptist Church, 1220 E. 10th Street.

The St. Andrews Episcopal church
will host it’s fourth annual “Evening
of Jazz’’ to be presented Sunday,
May 12, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Andrews
Espicopal Church, 3601 Central

will be the Honorable Harvey B.
Gantt, Mayor of Charlotte.

Cullough. Proceeds from this pro
gram will go towards the Women’s
Day celebration, June 23.
The money is being raised for the
building of Salem’s new edifice. The

Thelma Stafford was chosen
“Member of the Year.” She was
given a trophy with praying hands
for her outstanding service as
church secretary as well as being
chairperson of the church’s recent
renovations projects.
Rev. J. E. Maxwell was given a
special certificate for his outstand
ing leadership.
Henderson Grove Presbyterian

Mint Hill. Sunday School begins at
10:15; worship service at 11 a.m.
