HERE AND THERE.The addition of George Rogers
makes the Washington Redskins one of the most feared
teams in the National Football League....Would you
believe that an all-star team of CIAA athletes defeated an
all-star lineup of AGC players in Elizabeth City re

Attendance to the National Basketball Association
games set a new record this year. More than 10 million
fans were counted. The mighty Boston Celtics were the top
draw, having played before 1,273,915 paid fans to Chicago,
Houston, Dallas, Detroit, the Los Angeles Lakers and
Philadelphia were the other NBA teams to play before
more than one million people at home during the regular
season.
SUDDEN THOUGHT.If three wrongs doesn’t make a
right, wonder why Yankee owner George Steinbrenner
gave Billy Martin a fourth opportunity to fail? With the
exciting new MetsfasU>ecoming the “C*vorite” of the New
York newspapers, Steinbrenner probably thought the
Yankees needed Billy to get them back on the front pages.
I disagree. In my opinion, the problem with the Yankees is
that they need to learn to run the bases better, hit the
baseball more often and turn in some outstanding plays on
defense. Until they do, George’s horse better run like hell
in the upcoming races..
Look for former NBA great Don Chaney to become the
head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers before the playoff
season runs its course. He won nine of 16 games as an
interim skipper.
The USFL continues its decline in TV ratings. Last
Sunday’s contest between Jacksonville and Birmingham
was the lowest ever, with a very poor 2.6 rating. In the
meantime, the Yankees and White Sox were being
hatched by 7.7 percent of the nation’s households and 6.1
percent were viewing the Philadelphia-Milwaukee NBA
game.
Earlier predictions are that the contract packages for
NFL first-rounders will drop in value from 10 to 20 percent
this year. A year ago, the first-rounders averaged $168,000
in base salary, $903,000 in bonuses, and 19 received low
interest loans averaging $514,000.
Tampa Bay Bandits’ owner John Bassett may have
offered a good suggestion. He wants to continue the spring
football schedule and to include teams in London, Mexico
City, and Tokyo. Needless to say, he was voted down
Monday by the other USFL owners.
. Billy Martin may not have endeared himself with the
Yankee players. He advises curfews will be honored,
attendance at practice games will be mandatory, no golf
or public appearances will be made on game days and
jackets and ties will be worn on planes.
Calvin Peete is currently holding down the Number Two
position among the PGA money leaders. He’s pocketed
$289,030 in four months. Jim Thorpe is 78th among the
leagers with $34,614 In earnings and Jim Dents has won
$18,116 and is 116th in the order. ^
The odd makers have Milwaukee favored by 3Vfc points to
take the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA series. The two
teams split six games 'during the regular season. At this
writing, the 76ers have a 2-0 edge in the best of five series.
John Love informs that the Par Busters will compete in
the Mecklenburg 4 Ball Tournament here this weekend

May 18-19. fhe next weekend will find the Par Busters
playing in a Pro-Am event in Atlanta, Ga.

stars and athletic program patrons

20. Included were two groups of

very well. She was a standout track
star in junior high school."
Andrea, who lives in Davidson,
