Gardner-Webb or Winston
Salem State University are the two
schools that Garinger’s Raynard
Stephens is considering attending.
“I am really interested in
Gardner-Webb,” he said. “I talked
to the coach and I liked the school.”
• Stephens is going to concentrate
on a major in computer science or
communications. r
“The most important thing I
learned from basketball was that
you should try to excel at all times,”
he said. “You have to try hard and
give it all that you have got.”
This philosophy came from his
mother and father, Lewis and
Catherine Stephens, and from his
coach, Bruce Jreutzer.
The Wildcat played basketball
with the Milton Road Salvation
Army Boys Club and was cut from
several junior high teams before
making the Garinger junior varsity
as an 11th grader.
At 6-5 and 170 pounds, he was a
cinch to make the varsity.
“Lack of a good point guard hurt
us,” he informed. “We also didn’t
develop a killer instinct. We would
be ahead and still manage to lose the
game.”
Stephens averaged 12.5 points and
11 rebounds per game as a senior.
His best game came against West
Mecklenburg when he scored 18
points and pulled down 12 rebounds
and had five assists.
“My role on the team was as a
rebounder,” he said.
. The Wildcats were 13-11 overall
and 8-10 in the conference.
Before he made the varsity, he
was a member of the best Garinger
junior varsity in history.
The team was 16-4 and finished
second to the Independence Pa
triots.
' Of coaeir Bruce Kreutzer Ste
phens, he said, “He helped me with
my outlook on basketball, helped me
to continue on the road to college,
and helped to give me the initiative
to assert myself on the court as well
as ott the court. •
“She has always taught me to do
the best in everything that I do,” he
revealed.
"And my father encourages me
also by helping me with different
phases of my game,” he continued
White 25 for the Suns.
