The Wildcat played basketball with the Milton Road Salvation Army Boys Club and was cut from several junior high teams before making the Garinger junior varsity as an 11th grader. At 6-5 and 170 pounds, he was a cinch to make the varsity. “Lack of a good point guard hurt us,” he informed. “We also didn’t develop a killer instinct. We would be ahead and still manage to lose the game.” Stephens averaged 12.5 points and 11 rebounds per game as a senior.
