Opinions At North Mecklenburg Do You Enjoy Watching Sports? With school back in session and the season changing, many people’s thoughts turn from summer pastimes Jo sports activities, either as players or as spectators. Are you a sports fan? What’s your favorite sport? Which teams do you root for? These are some of the questions i asked of students at North Meck lenburg High School recently. Here are their responses. • MARK DUNCAN, a senior, is a resident of Beatties Ford Park. “Yes. I'm a sports fan. I like football and basketball-football because of the contact and basketball be cause of the excitement. I really like playing football. Out of the X>-plus pro football team. I like Dallas the best.” e DARRYL HUNTER, senior, Mallard Creek: "Oh, yes. I'm a sports fan. I like all sports, but the main ones are basketball, football, track, and golf. I like haw the games are played and, for the most part, I like the people who play them. Hike to play football and also golf. My favorite professional football team is the San Francisco 49ers.” • LETURA STITT, senior, Tangle wood: “Yes, I’m a sports fan. I like basketball, football, track, arid golf. What I like most about these sports is the competition that goes with them. I also like the action-packed excitement of it all. I like to play basketball a lot and hope to play in college next year. My favorite pro fessional team is the L.A. Lakep.” • SAND! BRATTON, senior, Tri nity Park: “Yes, I’m a long time sports fan I like football and bas ■ ketball. In football, I ilk# to see the players run with the ball and make touchdowns. I don’t like to see any easy touchdown. I prefer seeing the ball carrier break tackles. But basketball is my favorite sport. I like to see a lot of dunks and faking My favorite basketball player is Ralph Samjjpon.” • TRINESA WILSON, a Trinity Park senior, is also a sports fan. “I’m a fan of football, baseball, and basketball. I like the toughnna of football and the players I don’t know what it is I like about base ban, but I enjoy watching it on television. I’ve never been to a real live game I like basketball be cause it’s an ever-changing sport fitted with action." Elks National Foundation Offers - ’* - ’• * t \ 1 ^ , T * * ’ C.-*d &2,000 Grants Washington, D.C. Students plan ning to pursue a vocational-techni cal course in a school or college leading to an associate degree, certificate, or diploma, but less than baccalaureate degree, are eligible to compete for $2,000 grants offered J by the Elks National Foundation, the Elks National Foundation Trustees have set aside $496,000 for the grants for the 1980-87 -1987-88 school years. Bach grant is for $1,000 for each of two years. A total of 249 grants will be awarded, with at least one per state, and additional grants allotted ac cording to Elks' donations within each state. Although graduating high school seniors arc encouraged to apply, older students who desire training or re-training are encouraged to apply for these grants. A high school diploma or GED is not required. Applications are available from financial aid officers at community and technical colleges and local I-odges of the B.P.O. Elks of the USA. Application deadline is No vember 25, 1905, and applications must be submitted to the student’s local Elks Lodge. Each state’s ap plications will be judged by a panel selected by the Association of Com munity College Trustees (ACCT). FoUdife Festival Mecklenburg County’s Latta Plan tation Park, located on Sample Road, 10 miles north of Charlotte off Beatties Ford Road on the shores of Mountain Island Lake, is the site for the fourth Annual Fofklife Festival This festival celebrating folk arts and crafts will be held October 5, 10 a m. to 5 p.m. The grounds of historic Latte Place, a river plantation built In 1800 by merchant James Latte and re stored with County funds, provides an appropriate setting for this year’s event. Autumn’s blush should be on the trees under which open hearth cooking and other folk aria will be demonstrated. '-ijiifiF A tentative Hat of activities tt cludes folk music, country dane ing. spinning and weaving, wood carving. home baking, proaaing apple cider, basket weaving, quilt ing. storytelling, beekeeping, and apple bobbing.
