Pinochle Bugs Will
Be Inducted Into
National Group
The Pinochle Bugs, a national
women's organization, will induct
the Charlotte chapter of the Pi
nochle Bugs Social and Civic Ctub on
Saturday, October 12, at 7 p.m. at
the Radisson Plaza Hotel.
Mrs. Perdethia Lowery, national
president, and Mrs. Gwendolyn
Hoey, vice president from Phila
delphia, will officiate at the induc
tion ceremonies. Representatives
from 18 cities will be In attend
ance.
Immediately following the induc
tion, the local chapter will host a
gala cocktail-dinner party in the
Mecklenburg Room at the Radisson
for out-of-town Pinochle Bugs.
Prior to the induction on Friday,
October 11, the local chapter will
entertain the Pinochle Bugs of
Portsmouth, Va„ at a get-acquaint
ed party at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Samuel Hill.
The officers of the local chapter
are: Esther Hill, first president;
Alma Motley, vice president;
Frances Waddell, recording secre
tary; Barbara Warren, correspond
ing secretary; Lynn Blackburn
Givens, financial secretary; Mabel
Dillard, treasurer; and Gwendolyn
Cunningham, public relations.

Dr. Thelma Adair'
Represents U.S.
At Fellowship
Dr. Thelma C. Adair, chairperson
of the Division and Department of
education at Barber-Scotia College
in Concord, was among a consul
tation of 18 participants repre
senting eight regions of the world
who recently observed the 18th
anniversary of the Fellowship of
Least Coin Council of Churches
Facilities in Hong Kong.
The Fellowship of the Least Coin is
the fulfillment of the vision of Shanto
Solomon a woman of India, who
sought a way of helping indivi
duals, groups, and nations to work
for reconciliation and peace. Wo
men are invited to offer a prayer for
peace with justice and as an af
firmation of that prayer set aside the
least coin of (heir country. The
coins, when brought together, create
a pool of funds that have been used
to promote projects around the
world. Thousands upon thousands
have been helped over the de
cades by the prayers and the mi
racles of the Least Coin Fund.
Dr. Adair was the Bible study
pleader for the consultation attend
ees who presented regional and
global issues and concerns during
their visit. En route to the Hong
Kong Fellowship of the Least Coin
Consultation, Dr Adair spent se
veral days in Seoul. Korea, as a
z guest of the Korean Church Wo
men United. Dr. Adair met with
Z seminary and university leaders and

Free National Colon-Rectal Cancer

President Reagan’s recent bout

For the fifth consecutive year,
October 17-19, the AMC Cancer Re
search Center and Medicine Shoppe
pharmacies are co-sponsoring a
fwa, National Colon-Rectal Can -
cer Screening. Medicine Shoppe

pharmacies nationwide will give
top* take-home test kits to help spit
the cancer at its ear hast stages. The
screening Ik recommended for all
persons over age 46 and should be
done annually.
Positive test results indicate trac
es of “hidden" blood in the stool - a
potential warning sign ot colon
rectal cancer or other intestinal
health problems such as ulcers are
diverticulitis.
People are asked to follow s
special diet for 4» hours prior to, and
during, the three-day teat period. No
red eaten during the

AMC Cancer Research Center in
Denver for free analysis. Test re
sults are sent directly to all par
ticipants. If analysis indicates po
tential problems, a second, free test
is provided to verify the results. All
participants with positive results
are advised to consult their physi
cians to obtain a precise diag
nosis.
During the past four years, more
than 500,000 people took advantage
of the screening and protected
themselves against colon-rectal
cancer. For 2,000 people, the test
identified health problems that
needed immediate medical atten
tion. For some, it literally saved
their lives
