DISCOVERY PLACE Spooky noises, weired specters and scary sights-that’s what Hallo ween is made of. That’s what kids will find if they visit the Haunted House at Discovery Place anytime from October 18 - Novem ber 2. Sponsored by WBTV and the Guild of the Sci ence Museums, the abode of the “Mad Scientist,” as the haunted house is known will be open weekdays from 4:30-9 D.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 1-9 p.m. In addition to the tricks, there’ll be treats to delight the kids’ tastebuds. Refreshments will be available and Hal loween novelties will be sold at the Collector’s Corner. Also, a Haunted House coloring contest will be held at elementary schools, and winners will receive free tickets. HALL AND OATES Daryl Hall and John Oates will split the pro ceeds from their new sin gle between two charities, the United Negro College Fund and Live Afd’s Afri can relief project. The single, “A Night At the Apollo (The Way You Do The Things You Do-My Girl)” was born of Hall and Oates’ desire to repay the black community for giv <A a .t ' ' ing the duo its musical inspiration. WFAE Listener-supported radio station WFAE-FM 91 re ceived a resounding vote of confidence from listen ers and businesses in its 22 county coverage area during “Visions for 86," 91’s week-long fund raising campaign, file radio sta tion exceeded its $130,000 goal by $12,000. What that means is more good jazz to be featured during the' evenings and that's defi nitely a winner! ONE FINAL NOTE! ..Last week I got a chance to see a master per form. Lionel Hampton was in concert this past week end at Spirit Square and performed to a capacity audience. With his 17-piece orchestra, Lionel Hampton delighted and musically satisfied each member of the audience. Whether he was scatting and solicit ing responses from the au dience or whether he was playing manificently on the vibraphone, the piano or drums, or whether he had the audience eating out of the palms of his hands with the jokes he told, Lionel Hampton proved, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that he is indeed a master at his craft. From the outset, Lionel flatly told the audience that we were going tp party until 5 o’clock in the morn ing. Even at the age of 72,1 believe Lionel could have Masterpiece Opening Set Charlotte’s masterpiece, the Mint Museum, will open its expanded facili ties to the public on Sun day, November 10. The ex pansion, which more than doubled the exhibition space, was made possible by funds raised through a bond issue and private do nations. The expansion will house the Dalton collection of American and European art which was donated to the museum and the Mint’s permanent collection. As part of the renovation, a . new entrance facing Randolph Road was de signed to provide easier acceesifaUKy. Mint hours will be 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.bn Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sa turdays, and 1-6 p.m. on Sundays. The Mint Mu seum will be closed on Mondays. He is amazing and has the energy of someone twice his age or even younger. Not being a fan of the big band era, I did recognize a . few of the songs, “Sweet Georgia Brown, “Neutron Dance,” and “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.” But it really didn’t matter, the music was just fantastic and the finale, which in cluded the orchestra pa rading throughout the au dience on “When The Saints Come Marching In," was even more so.
