Our Modern Day Teacher Isn’t Concerned With Developing|jIinds And Shaping Talents School days, school days; Good (rid golden rule days, reading and writing and arithmetic taught from the tune of a Hickory stick To those who are horn the old school, this song has a very valid meaning It ushers us back to those mornings in elementary school when the day start ed out with a song, a prayer, and a lesson from The Book. It takes us back, when a teacher’s major concern was not only what you learned, but how to respect yourself and respect others. Maimers were just as much a part of the > curriculum as English. .VJ School then consisted of talent shows, social?, plays, all held on school time. Field trips took you out of town and not down the street. And the ETA was not a group of yfcg. nant persons who met only when a crisis occurred; but rather a group of dedicated ' parents who supported the teachers and the pro grams. ' But those were the days, long gone, and far behind us.. ■ > We are now confronted with Dillar-Dollar, the one, two, and sometimes no-show scholar* who is not interested in education, mad at the world, and wants to organise a mili tary camp to overthrow Jay Robinson, hold the school board hostage, and deQver oppressed students from a seven-hour bore dom to a seven-hour party. Our modern-day teacher isn’t concerned with de veloping minds and shap ing character. She or he is -too busy lobbying for pay raises, asking about bene fits, talking about ..fa tigue, and wondering if the assertive discipline plan „WU1 realty work on black kids. Our modern-day teacher would realty like the title “Teacher of the Year” with all the presage and bonus es that go with the honor. But she or he would rather ,.v stand in a gas-filled room with a lit match than to slow Us or her pace and n»ake an appeal to slow - learning black kids. In our npw school the Golden Rule has been replaced by a mo ment of meditation for the dead. Prayer has been ruled punishable by death. And God - where la He? A cartoon in the Charlotte Observer give*, the answer: There are four parents that stand angrily in the school yard. At the front entrance to the school there stands a robed angel with his finger pointed skyward. As the parents stand in front at the school, there seems to be an expression on their faces as if to ask the question, “Where is God?” The angel, still pointing upward, replies, “He is not here, He is risen.” God was asked to take indefinite leave. But when He left enthusiasm left, importance left, commit ment left, and most of all, love left. And we are now confronted with a system ot education that is boring and does not work. School, to the student, is an shea land in which be cuts out and plays hoqkey from because their educa tors sort and stamp you from kindergarten to 12th grade. If a child fail* a CAT test, he or she is placed in; the “dumb” category,: la beled unteachable, and de clared a misfit in society. To the poor child there ts no sense of worth or contribu tion. The whole system is me- ■; chanical. The lactoses me chanical, the subject ma&v ter mechanical, and eUso the smiles and compli ments you get are mech anical. It is a system of form, fashion and outside show. If one walks into a kin dergarten class, be will be shocked to discover that “giiHng verbal praise” is a positive reward. In other words, you have to earn |t tog* it. T A writer once said that tp eduoate a man in mind and not in morals is to create k •7 •. w» .< .X»'V • , menace to society, if you reed newspapers and watch TV you’ll End this to be tn*.; »-/t I sincerely believe that in order to change the status of education in this coun try, money' will not he needed nor a larger staff. What is needed is for every person to clean out the closets of his heart. Greed, prejudices, hatred, selfish ness, stupidity and pious ness need to be checked from the superintendent’s office on down to the bus driver’s. Our educational system can build a future for our children only if educators and parents look for what is wrong with current prac tices and with themselves. People in the profession al arena hoed a revival more than some church people. Nothing in our instir tutions will ever change, gang violence, drugs, rape, etc., until people begin to realise that every person is a part of a puzzle that contributes to the whole - ( picture.
