It states .that we must aban don our prejudices of every kind and accept the prin ciple, of the oneness of man kind as the first prerequi site for “the reorganiza tion and administration of the world as one country, the home of mankind." These are but a few of the profound points that can be gleaned from this message of "THE PRO MISE OF WORLD PEACE” from the Univer sal House of Justice. The Baha’i Communities world wide believe and are con fident that ; the age-old dream that peace is pos sible can be a reality and is at our fingertips. The . Baha'is desire to impart to everyone the emphatic pro mise, of Baha’u’llah, the ' Prophet Founder of the Baha'i Faith that ‘‘.^.these ruinous wars shall pass •Way and the 'Most Great Peace’ shall come." mure uian one n unarea years ago, the Founder of the Baha’i Faith, Baha’u’Ilah, (translated from Arabic: “The Glory Of God”), wrote letters to the kings and rulers of many countries, catling -'them to join together and establish s lasting peace. Since this call was not heeded, Baha’is feel that the summons must be made again. The Baha’i Faith is the newest of the world’s re vealed religions Founded in 1*44 in Persia (now. Iran), the Baha’i Faith faced decades of bloody repression in the land of its origin. Despite constant oo-. txwtioo, there are noto over 111,000 Baha’i com munities around the globe, including more than 380 nations and territories' Today, the Baha’is are once again facing severe persecution in Iran. The oppression of the Iranian Baha’is, solely for religious motives, has been con densed bp international or ganizations, national go vernments and the media on all continents. Hallmarks of the Baha’i Faith are belief in the oneness of mankind, the essential unity of the world’s great retighxtt teachings and the unques tionable sovereignty of one God. iite Bana i Faith derives its name from’the name at its Pounder, Baha’u’llah. Baha’is believe that Baha’u’llah is the most re cent of God’s Messengers to mankind. A Baha'i Is a follower of Baha’u’llah. Baha’u’llah was born in Iran in 1817 to a family of Persian noblemen. Be re jected a life of material comforts and political pres tlge to join a religious , movement which promised that a new and universal Messenger was soon to appear sent by God. When Baha'u’llah was impri soned in Teheran in 1853, He received what Baha’is believe to be a revelation from God, naming Him as this universal Messenger. After release from the dun geon in Teheran, the next forty years of Baha’u’Dah’s life were a series of exiles, imprisonments, persecu tions and tortures, per petrated by two govern ments and the clergy they supported. It was while Baha’u’llah was under house arrest in Adrianople and again while impri soned in the barracks of Akka, Palestine (now Israel;, that He wrote let ters summoning many beads of state to listen te the new message He was bringing from God and to establish peate. Baha’u’Uah passed away in 1892, outside of Akka, while still nominally a pri soner. For this reason, the World Centre of the Baha’i Faith is located in Isreal. This World Centrals the seat of the Universal House of Justice, a body of nine members elected by Baha’i delegates from all countries having a nation al Baha’i organization. . . 1IIC UluYCTBAI nuusc m Justice has expressed hope that their message, "THE PROMISE OF WORLD PEACE,” win receive “serious consideration, conversation, and action within and without the Baha’i Community.” Richard Ranch • t_. t Jacob Critical Of Repeal - .Editor’s Note: The fol lowing statement was is sued by John E. Jacob, President of the NUL, and comments on the report on the health status of blacks ‘ and Hispanics issued by the U S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Department of Health and Human Servic es’ report on the health status of blacks and His panics is disappointing in that it fails to teD us anything about the health of black Americans that we have not known before. In several of our recent an nual reports on “The State of Black America” we have covered much the same ground as HHS. We are somewhat encouraged by the fact that the govern ment has expressed grave concern about the disparity inthe health of whites and member8 of minority groups and has agreed that many of these disparities are preventable. proved In the foreseeable future. At a minimum, we would have expected the govern ment to announce a co ordinated national strategy to reduce the disparity in infant mortality among mi nority groups and whites. tam" 1 ■■ ■ ' ■ in Got something on you mind?
