A J. Howard dement □. Is Active In And Ovic Organizations A member of the Dur ham City Council and an attorney, A.J. Howard Clement III, serves as assistant vice president, and claims supervisor of North Carolina Mutual life Insurance Company. Born in Cleveland, NC, Clement is a 1955 graduate of Howard University and a 1960 graduate of Howard University Law School. Throughout his career, Clement has been the reci pient of several honors and awards including the 1973 Civic Award from the A. E. Spears, the second district manager for the Charlotte district office for North Carolina Mutual. Spears died in March, 1M1. Highly-Respected Arthur Spears Was Charlotte District Pioneer His picture hangs on a wall in the training room at the Charlotte district office of the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Co. He is Arthur Eugene Spears, known as “A.E. Spears,” a longtime North Carolina Mutual sales agent in Charlotte and manager of the Charlotte district office. His picture hangs in the training room because Mr. Spears, who died in March, 1981,. at age 96, was a leading insurance salesman for North Carolina Mutual. He was also an outstanding Charlotte business leader. He was responsible for bringing Mechanics k Farmers Bank to Charlotte. He was bank director and chairman of the Charlotte board. ' His picture also hangs in the training room because Mr. Spears sold about $250,000 in insurance annually **-■ for North Carolina Mutual. His picture serves as a role model for young sales agents and managers. Company officials knew Mr. Spears as "Mr. Quarter Million " Walter Twitty, a retired manager of the Charlotte district office, calls Mr. Spears “Superman." "He wrote about a quarter of a million dollars worth of new business a year as a part-time ordinary. He worked for North Carolina Mutual until age 90. He was a super sales person.” Actually, Mr. Spears retired from North Carolina mutual in 1955, but continued to serve customers until be was 90. ' Mr. Spears, born in 1805 near Harrisburg, joined North Carolina Mutual in 1915 as an agent in ineraw, S.C. He came to Charlotte in 1927, and in 1M2, was elected to the board of directors. He was manager of the Charlotte district for 27 years. During his 90 years with North Carolina Mutual, Mr. Spears was instrumental in bringing the company white policy holders. Most of the company’s clients, then, and now, are black, say company officials Mr. Spears graduated from what is now A AT State University in Greensboro. King’s Club, Inc.; 1978 Man of the Year Award from the State of NC; the 1962 Silver Beaver Award, Occonee chee Council, Boy Scouts of America; and the 1984 Dis tinguished Alumni Citation from Howard University. Clement, a member of several law associations, has a very active political career also. He was ap pointed, in 1968, to the State Democratic Reorganiza tion Commission. After which, he became p mem ber of the State Democra tic Executive Committee and later a member of the Durham County Democra tric Executive Committee. In 1977, Clement was ap pointed by Gov. James Hunt to be a representa tive to the North Carolina General Assembly. In 1983, Clement was appointed to the City Council of Dur ham, NC. Extremely active in edu cational and civic affilia tions, Clement is a member of the NAACP, the Durham Business and Professional Chain, WTVD Minority Affairs Advisory Com mittee, Durham League of Women Voters and the board of directors of Dur ham Chapter North Caro lina Symphony, to name a few. He is a member of the advisory council for Young Volunteers in Action, Dur ham, NC, and chairman of the Business Advisory Committee of Hillside High School. Clement is also a member of A.S. Hunter Lodge No. 825, Prince Hall Masons. His religious affiliations include membership with Saint Titus’ Episcopal Church in Durham, NC. He is vice president of the board of trustees and mem ber of the Executive Com mittee for the Christian Action League of North Carolina. Clement is a li censed lay reader and Chalicist of the Episcopal Dioceses of NC and a Vestryman of Saint Titus’ Episcopal Church.
