Grier Chosen 1986 “Model Of The Year”

I went to Mr. Pee’i, a club located
on Freedom Dr., a couple of weeks
ago to see some models showcase
their fashion savoir falre for the
Ebony * Ivory 1986 Model of the
Eg Year competition. >,*•.. vWT ,
Prom the looks of it, Mr. Pee’s Is a
very nice place. It’s spacious.
There’s plenty of roots to sit, when
you want to sit. And, the dance floor
is large enough for you to stretch
out without getting hit by somooe
who’s doing the “Snake.” (Other
area clubs should take notice.)
Anyway, there wasn’t much
dancing going on this night. The
models held center stage. Each
contestant, was allotted about five
minutes on the floor to do their
model i ng-sk i t- ty pe-of-number. *
Several of the young ladies were
creative and stylish. To tell the
truth, not one was really awful.
Some of the models looked like real
winners But, of course, there can
only be one.
Carried into the spotlight on a
wide stretcher, borne by four
manly-muscled men, Shirley Grier
reclined in her beaded white gown.
(The gown alone weighed eight
pounds.) Then moving to the song,
“Muscles,” she stepped from her
man-powered carrier and proceeded
to sashay around her four bearers,
who were clad id, simply, loin cloths
and oil. Shirley's gown shimmered
and the men's muscles rippled in the
light. Everyone enjoyed this skit
Shirley Grier was selected by
Ebony & Ivory as the “1986 Model of
the Year.”
She’s been modeling for about a
year and said it felt great to win the
modeling competition. Future
plans? Says Shirley, “I’m open for
• whatever comes along.” Her gown,
fnd many of the other models’
attire, were courtesy of Sophisticat
ed Ladies and Gents, owned by
Saundra Bryant in Rock Hill, S.C.
While at the competition, I ran into
Terry Stralte.^n old friend. He must
have been keeping an eye out for
some modeling talent. He told me, in
strictest confidence, that he’s
putting together a road show as part
of his Straite Line Modeling Agency.
As usual, Terry looked sharp.
I also noticed that Geneal Frazier
was one? of the judges for the com
petition. And after the show, when
everyone was dancing, I peeked and
saw Geneal doing a pretty mean
“Conga."
And speaking of winners.... Becky
Blackmon was recently selected as a
state finalist in the 1986 Miss North
Carolina U.S. Teen Pageant. Becky,
the daughter of Carol Chambers,
• will compete in the Miss North
Carolina U.S. Teen Pageant in
Greensboro, N.C., on March 22.
That will be the official state
preliminary to the Miss U.S. Teen
Pageant to be held in August, 1986.
And more winners.... Clayton
Perry is getting ready for a “Vegas
Grand Getaway” as he is one of the
winners of the Chrysler-Plymouth
»*l«s manager’s contest. Clayton,
sales manager at South Bouelvard
Chrysler-Plymouth, is being patted
on the back for a "superb job" in
attaining his program objectives.
He’s been awarded a four-day,
three-night trip for two, from March
14-17, 1966, in Las Vegas, the
"home of dazzling shows, neon lights
and round-the-clock-excitement.’’ I
wonder if Clayton can handle it?
But guess what! Some Las Vegas
excitement will be right here in
Charlotte on Monday, March 10,
when the "Marvelous" Marvin
Hagler vs John "The Beast" Mugabi
and the Hearns vs Shuler boxing
matches are broadcast live from
Caesar’s Palace to the Charlotte
Park Center. Someone keeps telling
me, it’s the hottest event of the
season. Everyone who’s anyone will
be there.
The same type of people will
met at the Excelsior Club on
Sunday, March 9, for a “Spring
Fashion Show with Wine and
Cheese.” Fashions will be by Viv’s
Boutique. Boutique owner, Vivian
Williams, is quite a grand dame of
fashion, I hear. The show’s at 6 p.m.,
the tickets are 97.
I heard it through the grapevine:
Talmadge McDow of 3017 Cricketeer
Dr. was named "Man of the Year”
by his fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha.
He will now compete for the state
title. Mary Youmans of 3315
Cricketeer Dr. was crowned Queen
of the Las Amigas 10th annual
Harvest Ball. Robert Easterling of
1524 Northbrook Dr. is the only
seventh grader at Coulwood Junior
High to be selected for the
“Math Counts” competition. He
could go all the way to the national
competition if he keeps winning.
Winning cornea easily for these precious tots. They
were the recent winners of the NANBPW baby contest.
First place winner (left) was David Littlejohn, son of
" * " -
Linda Littlejohn. David was also the winner of the baby
brag book. Ashley Brown, the daughter of Anita Brown
(right), was the contest’s second place winner.
