Supporters Raise Funds For Smith's Athletic Program
JCSU President, Dr. Robert L.
Albright, Is leading the growing
list of supporters for the cam
paign, now underway, to raise
funds for Smith's athletic pro
gram. "Overall support Is excel
lent, and momentum is building,
not onty In Charlotte, but also In
other cities around the country",
says campaign coordinator,
Clyde Brown. The campaign
has, indeed, started to take hold
in Atlanta, Georgia, Washington,
D.C., Greenville and Charleston,
South Carolina, Belmont, Kan
napolis, and Concord. "Our sup
porters and sponsors are com
ing in from everywhere there is
an Interest In JCSU athletics.
So, It’s far more than an effort
locked within the Charlotte
area", he said.
"So far", sa3Ts Brown," the cam
paign has raised funds In the
thousands of dollars". The mon
ey may be Just the shot of medi
cine, the sports program at
Smith needs to remain competi
tively healthy In today's increas
ingly expensive sports arena.
Alurrml and supporters of major
sports at Smith are apparently
finding the campaign a good
way to pitch In and help the Uni
versity with one of Its financially
burdened areas.
Dr. Albright says that he
deems athletics to be an Impor
tant dimension of the college ex
perience and he Is certainly
supportive of efforts, like this
new sports fund-raising cam
paign, to help the University de
fray some of the costs associat
ed with Intercollegiate sports;
help provide scholarships for
students who play sports, and
assist In the Improvement of
spx>rts facilities on campus.
This phase of the campaign,
according to Brown, revolves
around a contest, co-sponsored
by Eastern Airlines, which Is
providing the winner with two
round-trip tickets aboard the
Clyde Brown
airline to anjnvhere within the
Continental United States, and
by over 60 campaign sponsors
who are providing support for
the winner's food and hotel ac
commodations.
A donation of $1.00 Is all that
Is needed to enter the contest.
Of course, the more money a
person donates to the cam
paign, with the purchase of a
ticket, the better will be their
chances of winning the trip.
Brown, an alumnus of the Uni
versity, says that he Is especial
ly proud of the sponsors who
have contributed at least $25.00
to promote the campaign. Many
of the sponsors, while they are
not required to do so, have also
agreed to sell tickets for the
contest. The winner will be an
nounced after a drawing during
the 1988 ClAA Basketball Tour
nament in Norfolk, Virginia.
Brown was also quick to point
out that this Is Just a phase of
several efforts to help support
the Johnson C. Smith University
Athletic Program. Campaign
supporters, he says, wlU be rec
ognized and awards will be pre
sented during the annual JCSU
Athletic Awards Banquet.
Brown noted that as In any
campaign to raise funds, there
are usually people behind the
scenes making It happen. There
are many people who have al
ready stepped forward for this
Important first step." he ex
plained. The list Includes Dr.
