Smith Uoiverslty, on a project that will save the school nearly $200,000 in energy costs each year. Commercial Energy Sys tems Inc. and Way Engineering Company Inc. (CES/Way), in a joint venture, will Invest more than $800,000 In energy conser- iVatlon measures on the Char lotte, North Carolina campus. In a project arranged through a .U.S. Department of Energy grant 'to the United Negro College Fund. Houston based CES/Way has entered into a performance contract with Johnson C. Smith to provide equipment retrofits, energy control systems and management services to be paid for from energy cost savings. Johnson C. Smith University, with 22 major campus buildings serving 1,200 students, has an annual energy budget of more than $560,000. Engineering studies indicate that a reduction in energy cost by more than one third can be accomplished. The agreement with CES/Way in cludes the Installation of new, individual boilers tb replace an obsolete steam plant, along with the addition of small hot water heaters, lighting retrofits and the installation of a computer ized energy management sys tem. These measures should cut costs at the school by more than $190,000. The performance contract also calls for preventive mainte nance services and regular maintenance on all new equip ment that will be Installed. In addition, training of operations and maintenance personnel in energy efficient operations will be Included as a part of the pro ject. CES/Way will monitor the operation of the energy systems at the school and will continue to provide maintenance services during the life of the contract. "This project became available at just the right time for us", said George Hedgespeth, vice presi dent for Finance at Johnson C. Smith. "Our old system was on it's last legs and we were trying to figure out what to do.
