Plnn are two of the 100 or more outstanding graduates of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) being honored as Distinguished Alum ni at the 14th National Confer ence on Blacks In Higher Edu cation, April 19-23, at the Washington Hilton Hotel. The conference Is sponsored by the National Association for Equal Opportunity In Higher Educa tion (NAFEO). All honorees are nominated by their alumni Institutions for making significant contribu tions to the American society. Presentation of the NAFEO cita tion shows that the historically black colleges and universities continue to produce many high- quality Individuals who enter Into the American mainstream and contribute to outstanding progress, said Dr. Samuel L. Myers, NAFEO president. Shaw University located In Ra leigh, North Carolina, nominat ed Dr. James B. Humphrey II for this honor. He Is currently pas tor of First Baptist Church- West, Charlotte, North Carolina, and president of the Baptist State Convention, Inc. In Ra leigh. A native of Lumberton, North Carolina, he also attend ed Princeton Theological Semi nary In 1954-55 and Union The ological Seminary, 1960-61. He previously was pastor at First Baptist Church In Wash ington, North Carolina. He has received numerous honors In cluding the Distinguished Alum ni Award In 1986 and has pub lished "A Manual Of Church Ushers." Johnson C. Smith University In Charlotte nominated Dr. Plnn. He Is currently Medlcsd Di rector of the Health Center with Charlotte Memorial Hospital. A native of Lynchburg, Virgin ia, he also attended the Univer sity of Virginia In 1972-1975 and received the M.D. degree and the University of North Carolina In 1986-89 (M.P.H. Scheduled). He has received numerous honors Including the Omega Man of the Year Award In 1988. The HBCU Alumni wlU be In troduced and feted at a special conference session and honored at NAFEO’s closing Leadership Awards Banquet, Saturday Black Accountants Banquet The Charlotte chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA), Inc. will hold Its Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet on Friday, April 28, 8 p.m., at FDY, Inc., 3411 St. Vardell Ln., suite K. NABA will honor minority un dergraduate students from John son C. Smith University and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte who have proven their abilities In the field of account ing. A buffet dinner will be served prior to the awards ceremony.
