Smith University junior. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to communications majors who have completed their junior year. Applicants are recommended by faculty mem bers and then selected by the communication department staff. Albright, native of Ellenboro, NC, has interned at a local Charlotte television station where he worked as an engineer and production assistant in 1988. Begun as a cooperative venture between the Urban League, IBM, ihe City of Charlotte and other partners, this 12-week training program offers free word pro cessing training to participants. » Sheila Funderburke, program .director, says the cooperation received from the business com munity in the hiring of training center graduates has been tre mendous. The goal of the program is give participants skills training that leads to permanent full-time job placement. "Last year the center achieved an overall placement rate of 91 p>ercent for graduates," said Funderburke. "Thank you Charlotte for continuing to sup port our efforts in the areas of education and training." Smith University, has been accepted to the Medi cal School Program at Elast Car olina University in Greenville, North Carolina. Pla is a native Charlottean and a graduate of West Charlotte High School. At JCSU, she received a B.S. in Biology and graduated Cum Laude. Pla is a member of Del ta Sigma Theta Sorority and plans to return to Charlotte for her residency. Political Fellows From Charlotte Four Charlotteans were among the 20 graduates of the Spring 1989 class of Fellows of the In stitute of Politics. The gradua tion ceremony was held May 12 at the Holiday Inn In Wrlghts- vlUe Beach. Diplomas were awarded to the following local citizens: Jackie Edwards, 33, a sales associate for ERA Realty Unlimited, a Democrat: T. Michael Todd, 37, a partner in the law firm of Todd, Hefferon & Hefferon, a Democrat: Constance Wilson, 29, an assistant vice president and trust officer at NCNB, a Re publican: and Susan Zelgler, 32, an administrative assistant for the Republic Group, a Republi can. The Fellows met on ten week ends form January 13 through May 13 for a total of 50 seminars or activities involving public policy and political campaign techniques. The Spring 1989 class consist ed of 12 Democrats and eight Re publicans; 11 females and nine males, five blacks, 14 whites and one Indian.
