Elgh teen-year-old" Carlton Anderson served as Senior Class President for the West Charlotte Senior High Class of 1989. Voted "Best All Around Senior" by the student body, Carlton was a mem ber of the Clvltan Service Club, HOSA YMCA Teen Board and Project Uplift. He was listed In "Who's Who Among American High School Students." Anderson He also was a member of the Debate Team. He competed In the National Forensic League and earned a degree In merit and a degree In honor. Indian/U.S. Children's Art On Display At UNCC "From My Land to Your Land: Children's Art from India and America," Is currently on display In the Dalton GaUery of UNC Charlotte's Atkins Library. The exhibit, featuring the artwork of children ages 5-14 from Madras, India; Charlotte and Salis bury, Is the result of a seven-week, Fulbrlght- sponsored Faculty Development Seminar conduct ed by UNCC religious studies professor Dan White In India last summer. The exhibit Includes 42 pieces from India and 43 pieces from Charlotte and Salisbury. Many of the pieces, which are primarily drawings, are related to the cross-cultural theme and express the stu dent's views of their respectively countries. Previously shown In Salisbury, the exhibit will be on display at UNCC through June 30. Following a showing at country Day In September, the art work will return to Madras. The teachers plan to continue the exchange as a two-year pilot pro gram. The Dalton Gallery Is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. For more Information, call 547-2449 during business hours. A record holder for the State Championship, Carlton was captain of both Cross Country and Track teams at West Charlotte '88'-89. He was all Trl-County In track. Carlton will attend UNC- Chapel Hill this fall. He will major In biology with plans of becoming a doctor. The Success Of Teen Job Exchange A total of 3800 calls were processed during the five-day "Teen Job Exchange" at the WSOC-TV, channel 9 studios. Over 200 companies participat ed by offering jobs to teens. Realizing the problem of matching summer jobs with employers, Channel 9 set up a phone bank to take Incoming calls from teens looking for sum mer employment and employers with job opportu nities for teenagers. Teenagers ages 16 to 20 and employers looking for summer help dialed toll free numbers In North and South Carolina. There was no charge fro this service. Sponsored by Charmel 9, volunteers were recruit ed by The Charlotte Mecklenburg Urban League, Inc. Matching the teens to employers will be The City of Charlotte Employment and Training De partment. "Channel 9 and the Teen Job Exchange' gave teenagers the opportimlly to apply for work with out leaving home. Adults answering the phones were able to give teens advice, answer questions about working and encourage them In their first job search," said Jeanne Bohn, Channel 9's direc tor of community affairs. The Youth Club Is composed of young ladles between the ages of 12 and 16 years. Other advisors are Mrs. Diane Matthewson, Mrs. Clara Mitchell and Ms. Shirley T. Miller. Babysitting Training For Teens A free babysitting course will be offered to area teens on June 17. Sponsored by WSOC-TV, Channel 9, The Greater Caroli- nas Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Hemby Pedi atric Trauma Institute at Memo rial, the training begins at 9 a.m. and runs though 4 p.m. Beys and girls between the ages of ages of 11 and 14 must register for the course by calling their lo cal American Red Cross office In any of the 21 counties In North and South Carolina. Each registered participant will receive a study kit and after completion of the course wUl re ceive an American Red Cross certificate. 'WSOC-TV has become vitally concerned about the numbers of young children who take re sponsibility for their brothers and sisters and sometimes neighbors' children during the summer months. "Some children may assume these responsibilities without adequate preparation," ex plained Jeanne Bohn, director of public affairs at Channel 9. "A full day of training will provide teens with the Information and safely skills they need."
