Theology Seminary Grants 12 Degrees ATLANTA - Twelve seminari ans received the Master of Di vinity degree during the annual commencQpient exercises for Johnson C. Smith Theological Semlnaiy In Atlanta, Georgia. The ceremony was held Satur day, May 13, 10 a.m. tn the Mar tin Luther King International Chapel In cooperation with the five other constituent seminar ies of the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC). Dr. Marian Wright Edelman, presi dent and founder of the Chil dren's Defense Fund In Wash ington, D.C., delivered the commencement address. The 1989 graduating class Is reportedly the largest since the seminary moved from Charlotte, North Carolina, to join the con federation of seminaries at the ITC In 1969. Dr. Joseph Gaston, administrative dean for the In stitution, commented, "The graduates go from this place of fering much and facing tremen dous challenges as they enter the service of the Presbyterian Church (USA). They join other alumni who continue to distin guish themselves In service to our Church as It searches for maturity as a reunited denomi nation and strives to effect crea tive transition particularly In the southeast region where gov ernance structures Emd African- American configurations are undergoing a complete meta morphosis." These graduates have received the following appointments: Ralph Lowe, counselor and In terim chaplain for Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte, North Carolina; Vickie Powell- WUlIams, summer Intern at Rice Presbyterian Church, Atlanta, Georgia: Thomas Sears, Interim pastor of Midway Presbyterian Church In Midway, Georgia, and associate executive of racial and ethnic ministries for the Savannah Presbytery, Savan nah, Georgia: Angela Hardy, chaplain, USA Navy Reserves; Mara Wlndheim, Intern at Christ The Liberator Presbyterian Church In Flint, Michigan and Angela Hardy will assume the Internship as director of Chris tian Education for Calvin Pres- b5rterlan Church In Philadel phia, Pennsylvania. Meirvln Williams wlU do further study toward the Ph.D. In New Testament at Vanderbilt Unl- _ Edmunds Intern Reception Scheduled On June 15, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.. Executive Reflections/ Personnel will host a reception for over 100 minority student interns. The students are en rolled In colleges throughout the mid-Atlantic region. Each of the attendees are participants in lo cally coordinated Internship programs sponsored by area col leges and businesses. Including the Developmental Partners of Duke Power, the BEST program of the University of North Caro lina and the FEE program of Davidson College. 'The purpose of this reception Is to provide an opportunity for these students to become ac quainted with each other, to share their work experience and to develop a network of short term and, hopefully, long-term support which may continue into their professional lives," says Amy Edmunds, owner of Executive Reflections/ Personnel. Edmunds, who participated in a number of internships herself while a student at Davidson Col lege, Is providing a placement for Davidson student Ryan Ro berson this summer. "How to Maximize Your In ternship Opportunity" will be the topic of a presentation by John B. Ceilne, II, Howard Uni versity graduate and plant engi neer of Frito-Lay's Charlotte fa cility. While two International gradu ates will return to their home countries to assume leadership positions in the Church, Na thaniel Gal will be director of Christian Education in the De partment of religious Education for the Upper Nile Region, Mala- kaal, Sudan. Thomas Maluit Hoth will also return to Sudan to pastor the Presbyterian Church. Julius Nyaga will re main in Atlanta to pursue the Doctor of Ministry Degree at Johnson C. Smith Seminary. Both James Sanders and Her bert Hill are candidating for calls In Georgia, South Carolina and Charlotte. Johnson C.
