PageSB - THE CHARLOTTE POST - 'niursday, Juty 6. 1989 Old-Timers’ Game I enjoy playing in old-timers’ games. It’s a chance to visit with peo ple I haven't seen in awhile. Many of them are guys I played with or against, and we rellect on our careers and recall some of the more inter esting games and experiences. There arc many old-timers’ games through the summer. One of the biggest is in Washington. D.C., and I always like to go to it. Some of the proceeds go to help ex-players who may be a little down on their luck. This gives us a chance to help some of our old teammates. It’s easy to forget in the.se days of million-dollar salaries, but for most of baseball’s history, the average player didn’t make all that much money. Players now can be in the game for 10 years and be set for life. Some of the real old-timers played before baseball had a pension sys tem. T hey played Just as hard but were not able to reap some of tbe good harvest players do today. The game gives us a chance to help those old- timers, and tho.se of us who were more blessed appreciate the opportunity. There is a danger in these games — the threat of injury. The frighten ing part is that once back on the playing field, the old competitive urges ' ^return. Some of the,old guys want badly to hit another ball out of the park. Others want to throw a 90-rnile-per-hour fastball. That Just isn’t going to happen. Competitive desire or not, an old body Just can’t do some of the things it once could do. Players can be out of baseball for years, and suddenly they hit a ball and want to speed around the bases. Old, underused muscles can pull and tear, and it’s a lot longer healing at 55 years old than it was at 25, There s been some talk about a new professional league for base- ball’s old-timers. I suppose it is modeled on the success of golf’s senior circuit, which has been steadily increasing in popularity. But in golf, you can hit a ball and then .stroll after it. Baseball involves too much physical activity. With few exceptions, 1 don’t think a player who is 50 years old can go out and play three or four games a week That’s asking too much of your body. I don’t have any interest in playing in such a league myself. When I retired, my body was telling me it was time to quit. The game has been too good to me through the years for me to go out now and be a second- rate ballplayer. Ill Hank Aaron is (he top home run hitter of all time with 7SS homers. A member of baseball’s Hall of Fame, Hank is vice president of the Atlanta Braves.
