Page 6A - THE CHARLOTTE POST - Thuisday, July 6, 1989 Johnson Wins J.C. Smith Award Janie Mae Johnson, an em ployee at Johnson C. Smith for the past 27 years, has been hon ored as the first "Sara Stewart Distinguished Award" recipient. Johnson was honored during the University's Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day, June 23. The award Is named after Sara Stewart who worked at JCSU for 24 years before passing away in 1981. At the time of her death, she was the University's Direc tor of Personnel. The JCSU Board of 'frustees established the award to be given annually to a support staff member for exemplary service. Johnson told the gathering of University officials, faculty and ; support staff that she was ; ^honored and overwhelmed." •- President Robert Albright pre- . sented Mrs. Johnson a plaque and a cash award of $500. He praised Johnson's professional ism, dedication and pride for her work. Mrs. Johnson Is a member of Gethsemane A.M.E. Zion Church. She has one daughter: Thomasena Moore and four grandchildren; Bernard, Angela, Wanda L. Sloan is a 1989 grad uate of Livingstone College. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Sloan earned a BS in accounting from the college. While at Livingstone, Sloan was a 1987 Academic .All- American, a Julia B. Duncan Player, a member of Phi Beta Lambda and Delta Sigma The ta Sorority. Sloan now plans to attend graduate school after which her goal is to open an accounting firm. Smith Alumni Begin Meetings The Charlotte chapter of the Johnson C. Smith University Alumni Association will begin Its operational year on July 12 with Its monthly meeting on the university's campus In confer ence ixxsms B and C. at 7:30 p.m. The agenda for the meeting will Include Homecoming '89, tlie scholarship fund, the alum ni million dollar campaign and Summerfest. The chapter's annual member ship drive will begin very soon and all alumni are encouraged to Join the local chapter and support Johnson C. Smith. The newly elected officers of the Charlotte alumni chapter are; Andrew Ladd, president; ■Jonl Mills, first vice president; ■Annette Wright, second vice president; Leander Rogers, recording secretary; Norris Wil son, corresponding secretary; 'Glenda I^ant, treasurer; Harold Winston, parliamentarian; Fran Farrer-Bradley, sgt.-at- arms; and at-large board mem bers; Archie Haywood, Clyde Brown and Calvin Banks. NCNB Gives To South's Schools PALM BEACH, FL - NCNB Coip. recently announced a $2 million gift to the Southern Re gional Education Board (SREB) to support the board's Initia tives to improve public schools tfiroughout tire South. The "Investment In the future of our children" was announced by NCNB Chairman Hugh McColl at the SREB's annual meeting In Palm Beach. NCNB, the South's largest banking organization, will pro vide $1 million for a Leadership Academy to help school ofilcials set Improved student perfor mance goals, develop measura ble objectives and Implement plans to achieve results. NCNB also will provide $1 million In awards to schools or school dis tricts tliat develop model plans. Earlier this year, McColl chal lenged business and community leaders to support the region's school systems, which he said had become "distressingly be low average." calling the situa tion "a drag on economic devel opment and a blight on the region's quality of life," McColl said the problem stemmed from historical under-investment in primary and secondary public education throughout the South. Felicia and Maurice. JCSU English Professor and daughter of Sara Stewart, Mrs. Deanna Hlghe, thanked the Uni versity for recognizing her mother's commitment and love for her work and the University. President Albright also preserv ed certificates and pins for fr^e and ten years of service to the University. Two retirees were also honored: Mrs. Anne C. Lee, Curriculum Center Librarian and Mr. C. R. (Dick) Nichols, Di rector of Institutional Research and Planning.
