Sierra Leone Essay Winner Visits SCSC Solade Jean-Plerre Thorpe, winner of the Martin Luther King Jr. School Essay Contest In Freetown, Sierra Leone, won a trip to the United States. As pa part of the tour he visited South Carolina State College. Dr. Albert E. Smith, president of the college officially wel comed Solade to the college. He then toured the campus with Dr. Leola Adams, chair of the De partment of Home Economics, and Dr. Thomas J. Stewart, as sistant to the president for mi nority and International af fairs. Both have recently returned from a visit to Sierra Leone. He also met with several foreign students who joined him for for a luncheon. During the luncheon, Solade had the opportunity to meet Elolse Belcher, associate profes sor of drama and English who was the speech Instructor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. while he was a student In Affanta. This Is Solade's second visit to the U.S. where he has relatives In Dallas, Los Angles and Wash ington, D.C. so he was familiar with some of the country. When asked by the president about his sports activities he said his major sport was long distance running and that he hoped one day to compete In the Olympics. He pointed out that running Is a tradition In secon dary schools In his country. The 17-year-old admitted that read ing Is one of his hobbles In addi tion to running. The Mecklenburg contingent will leave the Coim- cll Service Center, 1410 E. 7th St., Cheirlotte, at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 29th. Local Scouts and Leaders wUl join approximately 34,000 others at the event, which Is held at Fort A.P. Hill near Bowling Green, Virginia, every four years. The Scouts will return on August 9th. The group will visit Washington, D.C. the Jamboree. as part of the trip prior to Scouts from Mecklenburg County council are di vided Into two troojjs for the Jamboree, and have been In training for the event since early 1989. The troops have had numerous meetings and one week end encampment In preparation for the trip. Lead ers for the two trcxjps are Phillip Briggs and Nor man Luke. Briggs v/as a troop leader for the 1985. The theme of thlsi year's Jamboree, 'The Adven ture Begins with Aunerlcan Youth," will focus on the great challenge and untold opportunities oior country offers the youth of today. SPACE — our new frontier — will be highlighted. Two arena shows will highlight the rich heritage of Scouting and our nation.
