Jackson also asked the crowd to stand If they knew anyone In their age group who had died , from drugs, used drugs. Jailed be cause of drugs or sold drugs. There weren't many who stayed seated. He also asked those who had , tried drugs to come forward. ■ There were even fewer people - who stayed seated. Jackson asked all the students to sign a pledge with Push-Excel that they would study for at least 2 hours per night with no tv or radio, abstain from drugs and alcohol and would not become or make anyone a teenage par ent. At apress conference following the rally, Jackson said he was not surprised with the number of students who came forward. "I see it everywhere I go, " he said. "This drug crisis, this use of drugs to cover up a vacuum in our souls. Is beginning to grasp our youth. "I want youth here in Mecklen- burgCounty to take the lead and establish a no first use drug poli cy. .." "He said he agrees with the Bush administrations recent {xrlicles In the war against drugs but said they "do not Include enough money for education in the formative years or rehabili tation for the sick." Jackson was asked also if he would run for president in 1992. "It's a bit premature to make that judgement, " he said. "But the signs are encouraging." But he again said he is not looking to run for mayor of Washington, D.C. "1 have no plans to run for the mayor in Washington, and con trary to what you've heard, there is no mayors race in Washington until November 1990." Read OUR Classifieds To Find The Job For YOU! Box 30144 Charlotte, NC 28230 She said concerns about poten tial security risks caused specu lation that the game would be moved, but it can be played on campus. "If we were to have the game at Memorial Stadium we would be sending the message that our home games were not safe," she said. "That's just not true, 1 feel safe and no one else has indicat ed to me that this is not a safe place to be." Ledford had to decide whether or not to solicit extra security. She says there will be 10 police men in addition to the admlnls- ratlve staff. 'That's standard procedure for any game. There is nothing out of the ordinary about the securi ty. I didn't see where extra secur ity was necessary," she said. Ledford says the only West Charlotte game that will be moved to Memorial Stadium is the one against Harding. The reason that game is being is to accomadate the large crowd. Garinger principal Richard Canselor said there is absolute ly no cause for alarm because the incident happened last year. "No teachers or students have expressed any reservations about the game. The whole situation would die down if the press would not rehash it. It's been played and replayed a dozen times," he said.
