"Persistence. I made a lot of
phone calls. My phone bill
was astronomical at the
time. When I talked to some
one who couldn't give me a
definitive answer, I called
until I talked to someone
who could.
"Growing up I trained my
self to be that persistent. A
lot of people told me I had a
lot of drive and determina
tion and 1 should put that to
use," Black said. "I started
taking on projects that
seemed lofty to a lot of peo
ple. When this started to
come together, I decided to
take It as far as possible."

By the time the movie
came to Its tragic, bloody
end, I was completety numb.
There are some good perfor
mances. especially cameos
by BUI Duke and Charles S.
Dutton. But the Hughes
brcithers have created a film
that is so depressing and vio
lent, I strongly caution you
noL to take young children. If
this Is a true statement on
thei status of black male
teenagers in America, they
need to pack their bags and
head for extinction. There Is
no hope.
