school. Mobley lives in Pied
mont Courts: Brewer lives in
Earle Village.
When Mobley heard about
the program, she knew it was
something to try. "1 knew 1
wanted to go back to school. I
wasn't going to go any fur
ther on my job." So she did
what was normal for a twin.
She called her sister.
Brewer was receptive to the
idea. But she had to consider
that she was a woman in her
mid 30s with children. "It
was scary. Before I decided to
go back, I talked to my em
ployer," Brewer said. "I had
gotten as far as I could go. I
decided to go for it."
Through it all, they have
been "motivating each oth
er," Brewer said. "When we
first came back to school, it
all seemed so exciting." But
about half way through, the
adrenaline had lessened and
being single mothers in
school became hard. 'We
kept each other going."
TTie twins, who have a hab
it of finishing each other's
sentences, say they are the
best of friends. 'We really do
get along."
The last week of school
meant a lot of time studying
three to four hours a day for
finals. "We took a lot of
classes together so we could
help each other out."
The pay off for persever
ance will be big, especially
graduation day when family
and friends will be at the cer
emony to see them receive
their diploma. And that will
be no small crowd. They
come from a family of 12
children, with two sets of
twins - the other set 11
months younger than they
are.
The sisters say they will al
ways go back to school to
keep up with what's happen
ing in their field.

JCSU President Robert L.
Albright wrote in a letter to
endowment supporters. "Five
McDonald scholarship win

recent Honors Convocation."
Three winners graduated
this month, all with honors
- Janel Clinkscales, Tonya
Glover and Trade Murray.
The scholarship endow

Subsequent donations and
interest have brought the

said.
A group of white agents sit
ting at another table were
served promptly, the news
paper reported.
Denny's officials in Spar
tanburg said in a statement
that the company "does not
tolerate discrimination of
any kind." It said an Internal
investigation should be com
pleted this week.
In California, the chain of
1,460 restaurants settled a
Justice Department lawsuit
by promising to enforce com
pany policies requiring
equal treatment of all cus
tomers.
'The (Maryland) incident
occurred only hours before a
federal court in California
signed over a consent decree
with Denny's that was de
signed to prevent just this
kind of racial discrimina
tion," St. Dennis said.
A separate federal lawsuit
against Denny's filed on be
half of 32 black California
customers was pending. Cus
tomers say Denny’s required
blacks to pay an extra
charge, refused to honor its
free "birthday meal" offer to
blacks and often threatened
or forcibly removed black
customers.
Jack Bullard, director of
the Charlotte-Mecklenburg
Community Relations Com
mittee, said he was "amazed"
a second incident happened
so close to the first. He also
said racial bias is more like
ly to be Incidental rather
than mandated.
"I could not imagine a place
where people are treated dif
ferently because of their
race," he said.
"Denny's has enough estab
lishments that this could be
something that occurred
with the individuals running
the establishments. "The lia
bility is too great (for chain
wide discrimination)."

THE BIG DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN A RENTER AND
An Owner is
Who Gets your
CHECK.
^Tvery month millions of Americans
put their hard earned money into
their landlords' pocket, instead of
putting it toward their future. Why"?
Because they didn't know that for about what they’re
paying in rent, they could buy a home of their own.
FOR ABOUT WHAT YOU’RE PAYING IN RENT,
YOU CAN BUY THE HOME OF YOUR DREAMS.
Right now the U.S. Department of Housing and
Urban Development [HUD) has lots of affordable
homes available. IVlany require very low down pay
ments. and are eligible
for FHA-insured
financing. HUD will even
pay most, if not all, of
your closing costs. And
these homes are just
waiting for you.
Call a local real estate
agent for more details,
today. Or for a free
brochure on how to buy a HUD home, call
1-SOO-7B7-4.HUD. And begin putting your check into
a great investment, not your landlord’s pocket.
