Jlack College Sports Review: OVER STORY MEAC Spring Championships student Athletes Compete In Final League Competition GREENSBORO, N.C. — During the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) 1993 Spring Championships held April 15-17 in Tallahassee, hosting Florida A&M University successfully defended its men's tennis title, won the inaugural women’s softhall tournament, and also came away with both the men’s and women’s track crowns. North Carolina A&T University claimed the baseball tour nament championship, and Howard Uni versity took the women’s tennis title. -Baseball- NCA&T swept through four games undefeated to win its first MEAC baseball championship since the conference started its tournament format in 1984. The Aggies had secured the title in 1974 when final overall records were used to deter mine the champion. Chris Leonard scored on an error in the bottom of the ninth inning as A&T edged Delaware State 6-5 to capture the 1993 title. The Aggies loaded the bases on a sin gle by Kevin Haithlock, a walk to Leonard and an error by Hornet second baseman Edgar Santana. Starting pitcher Greg Day was then relieved by Rob Heisler who issued a walk to Mike Artis which tied the > » . i- siHBSss* *. 1 - ' ^ ^ —- NC A&T earned the 1993 MEAC baseball championship with a 6-5 victory over Delaware State. Joining Artis on the All Tournament Team were infielders Dwight O’Neal of Florida A&M, Lamar White of Bethune-Cookman, and David Dill of Delaware State, and Joe Hill of North Carolina A&T, catcher Miguel Cruz of North Carolina A&T and Pitcher Craw ford Moser also North Carolina A&T. The Aggies stopped a three-year championship run by Florida A&M. -Softball- The FTorida A&M Rattlerette softball team won the inaugural Mid-Eastem Ath letic Conference softball championship Saturday by blowing the; past top-seeded Delaware State 20-3 at the Rattlerette soft- ball complex. Marigrace got the Rat tlerette rolling, when she hit a solo home- run to lead off the first, giving FAMU a 1- 0 lead. They scored 15 runs in the next four innings, getting five in the fifth. FAMU was comfortably ahead 20-0 before Del State scored its three runs in the last inning. Del State had reached the championship game by downing NCA&T 11-10. FAMU’s Psauntia Andrews was voted the tournament’s Most Outstanding Per former and her mentor, Veronica Wig gins, was named the Outstanding Coach.
