Page4B - THE CHARLOTTE POST - Thursday, July 1,1993 BEHIND THE SCENES With LISA COLLINS T he Latest Edition: Bel, Biv, Devoe is presently in the midst of an extensive promotional tour to coin cide with the release of its new 'Rootle Mack' album. The campaign is targeting their core audience of young street youths, which is re flective of the hardcore hip- hop Influence heard in their music. Now, three years after the release of "Poison" and a two-yearlong break from recording, the group Is hun gry for another smash. In conjunction with the tour, BBD is making an untold number of appearances on neighborhood basketball courts across the country to hoop up the hype about their first sl^le "Above The Rim." The group has also hooked up with several manufactur ers for their own line of ath letic wear (and BBD caps) called Flipside...So what's New Edition former lead voc alist Ralph Tresvant up to? You'll recall he was touted as the New Edition's golden boy. Looking back it could be said that the recording of his solo album (then being projected as one of MCA's hottest and most-anticipated releases) that triggered events leading to the subsequent breakup of the group. It was during the production of the project that Johrmy Gill took time off to do his highly success ful Motown debut, and the members of BBD went Into the studio to record "Poison" Gill's much-anticipated al bum sold well over two mil lion copies, but it was BBD who caught the Irrdustry by surprise, generating more than three million units in sales worldwide. In stark contrast, Tresvant's album, "Sensitivity" though it scored platinum status, was disappointing by compari son. Since then, Tresvant has been keeping a low pro file. Eyebrows were also raised when Tresvant was a no-show at the wedding of former ace Bobby Brown. At last word, Tresvant was in the studio recording his sec ond solo release...Don't feel bad, Ralph. Motown can't be all that excited about the re sponse to Gill's latest release, "The Floor" The dance cut, which is the lead single to his newest album, titled "Provocative" already seems to be levelling off. But don't take that as any indication of the album's most likely suc cess. Motown is expecting big things from it and I doubt they'll be disappointed. In the meantime. Gill's doing some producing of his own with his first project for II D Extreme, a trio CO-founded by his broth er, Randy , now signed to MCA Records. Lover's Lane: Best wishes to Angela Winbush and Ronald Isley, who exchanged wedding vows last weekend in Los An geles in a lavish ceremony. The most touching moment came when the groom sang to the bride...Meanwhile, the thrill is gone for 56-year old Billy Dee Williams, who re cently filed for divorce from his wife, Teruko, of 20 years. Williams cited irreconcilable differences...Also going their couple have been living apart since April. Do we really need another awards show? Spe cial awards will go to the fol lowing; Halle Berry, Denzel Washington, Eddie Murphy, Wesley Snipes, John Single- ton and Cicely Tyson (Life time Achelvement Award)...In other film news, look to be bombarded with word of "Bhopa" Paramount is al ready gearing up for the fall release of this Arsenio Hall production featuring Alfre Woodard and Danny Glover In the lead roles, with Mor gan Freeman directing. The separate ways are Berry Gordy and his wife, Grace Elaton. The studio is pulling out the stops.
