to be more difficult for
blacks. "Overall, the propor
tion of quitters Is lower for
blacks than for whites. In
1987, the quit ratio was 31.5
percent for blacks and 46.4
percent for whites.
The following Is a CDC list
of health consequences from
smoking related diseases:
•Black men and women
have a higher incidence of
respiratory system cancers

•Blacks also have higher
incidences of esophagus and
oral cavity cancer. Blacks
experience excessive mortal
ity for most tobacco-related
cancers.
•The average (armual age-
adjusted) mortality Is higher
among black men than
among white men for can
cers of the respiratory sys
tem, heart disease and
stroke.
•The death rates for black
women are higher than for
white women for cancers of
the respiratory system, heart
disease and stroke. In 1988,
48,000 black Americans died
from smoking-attributable
causes - these are deaths that
could have been prevented.
•The death rate due to
smoking for black men Is
triple that for black women
and 1.3 times higher than
the death rate for white men.
