Houston Sues New York Post Thxirsday, July 8,1993 - THE CHARLOTTE POST - Page Ad Copy Deadline is 12 Noon Every Tuesday i t .k '."'i Houston By Verna Dobnik ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - After being sued for $60 million by Whit ney Houston, the New York Post ran a correction retract ing the key elements in its report that the singer over dosed on diet pills. "In Monday's editions of the Post, it was Incorrectly re ported that superstar Whit ney Houston had been hospi talized in Miami after an overdose of prescription diet pills," the newspaper said in a correction placed next to a photo of a smlltng Houston. 'We can now report that Ms. Houston did not suffer an overdose of any pills, and does not take diet pUls. She was not admitted to Miami's Mt. Sinai Hospital (or any other hospital), and was not diagnosed with any heart ir regularities. ... The Post sin cerely regrets these errors." The singer, who owns a home in Mendham, N.J., alleges the Post had tried "to sell newspa pers at the plaintiffs expense, the truth being no impedi ment." After the first editions were printed with the correction, Houston's attorney, Sheldon Platt, said he would have "to study what was written first" before commenting. The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in federal court in Manhattan, names the Post and the two re porters who wrote the story, Florence Anthony and Bill Hoffman. Speaking on WRKS-FM, An thony apologized to the sing er. "I am very sorry that we caused all of this trouble and that the story was written in correctly," she said on the station's "Kiss Wake-Up Club" morning program. "After looking further into things yesterday, we learned that there were a lot of indis cretions...in the story," she said. "Because of the time the sto ry was written we did think things were true but after looking into things yester day, we found out that there were things that were printed incorrectly and for that rea son we are apologizing," An thony said. Houston is seeking $10 mil lion in libel damages and $50 million in punitive dam ages. A spokesman for the Post, Howard Rubenstein, said Tuesday that lawyers for the Post were reviewing the law suit and would have no com ment. The Post reported Monday that Houston, 29, had spent 90 minutes at Mount Sinai Hospital on Thursday and was diagnosed with heart ar rhythmia, apparently brought on by diet pills. "She has never taken a diet pill in her life," Platt said. "She's outraged. She's hurt." Platt said he has had no contact with the Post since the story was printed. "They filed their article and they didn't check with us," he said Tuesday in a telephone interview. "So, we're filing the lawsuit, and we're not checking with them." The complaint against the Post says the reporters pub lished the story "on a princi pal 'hard news' page and not on the tabloid 'Page Six' knowing that it would be un derstood ... as a factually ac curate story as opposed to a 'gossip' article." The story allegedly includ ed other "falsehoods," such as that Houston's weight had reached 200 pounds during her recent pregnancy, that she was depressed and that she was on the verge of pass- '> Mr. Tender? Ing out before being hospi talized, Houston has won two Grammys and is the best selling female recording art ist ever, having sold more than 55 million albums worldwide.
