Maybe a even a little com petition to make it intrest- ing? The Rooks may be Just the ticket. The Rooks is a chess club that opened for play in April. The club meets every Thursday at 7:30 p.m. - until at Renaissance Place. There is no age limit. "It is open to all" says Gerald Johnson, Publisher of The Post and a member of the club. "It is an opportunity to sit around and fellowship with other people who like to play." A quiet game like chess brings out the competitor in players. Just like any other sport. Johnson, perhaps with tongue planted squarely in cheek, claims to be the best player. "Some (players) Just get to gether and embarrass them selves," he said. The average attendence is 10 players every Thursday night. The Rooks was established by Robert Johnson, The Post's co-publisher. Right now there are 17 members on roster. Bob Johnson says the reason for establishing the group was "to re-establish an interest In the game." The Rooks are currently looking for more players. Right now there are only three women, so more are welcome. This Is the perfect opportunity to get together to socialize while taking in a Probe Into Angelo Robinson's Death is Asked For By The N.C. NAACP (bontlnued From Page lA the NAACP is calling for the following: ; •Establishment of citizens review boards In the state through legislation by the N.C. General Assembly. •Reassessment of the use of pepper Mace by law’ enforce ment officials. ; •Increased efforts to en hance the relationship be tween police and the commu nity. ; •Ongoing sensitivity and cultural diversity training for police officers. - •Enhancement and Imple- fnentatlon of community programs and training (cul tural diversity and conflict resolution) in Cabarrus .County. ■* The NAACP called for calm in Concord. The state of emergency enforced last week by the Concord Board of Aldermen was lifted Mon day. Businesses In the predomi nantly black Logan commu nity were required to close from 9 p.m. from 5 a.m. and jio sale of alcohol was al lowed anywhere in the city, in addition, no gasoline sales other than for cars were allowed. Police reported that things were back to normal. In the meantime police will contin ue to use pepper spray, said Robert Cansler, Concord po lice chief. "Pepper spray was adopted as a less forceful al ternative. Unless the medical examiner tells us it's some thing other than pure coinci dence, then we will continue to use pepper spray." The alternatives to pepper spray are more damaging, contends Cansler. "The other alternatives are a flash light, a night stick or a gun." Peeler said that since Ro binson's death, there have been "more and more" re ports of police misconduct, brutality and excessive force. "It is pretty normal to have people come forward with re ports after a situation like this." she said. The NAACP has urged Con cord citizens to refrain from violence. "The situation Is going to be tense for a while," said Peeler who has spent several days visiting Con cord. "There are people with calm heads to make sure that calm prevails. People want Justice to prevail." Skinhead Movement Growing .Continued From Page LA ' The report provides details of 22 killings It says were com mitted by skinheads since 1990 - more than triple the number blamed on the group in the three previous years. Most victims of the skinheads were minority group members: Hlspanlcs, African-Americans, Aslans, gays and the homeless. "The skinheads ... have visited a plague of violent crimes on the American people," the report said. "Skinheads have com mitted thousands of beatings, stabbings, shootings, thefts, synagogue desecrations and other violence and mayhem." i The biggest skinhead populations are found in New Jersey, Texas and Oregon, with each state having 300 of more mem bers, the report said. Four skinhead homicides were reported In Texas; California, Oregon and Washington had three each. According to the ADL, the only states with no reported skin head groups are Arkansas, Hawaii, Mississippi, North Dako ta, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming. Black Women Hold Expo Black women showed off their businesses uptown last week. ; The Carolinas Association of Black Women Entrepren eurs sponsored Its annual expo at Founders Hall, with 17 businesses displaying products and services. 'We need to let people know there are minority buslness- 'es that are selling services, professional services," said Laura McClettle, a past pres ident of the organization. A fashion show and enter tainment were held as part of the day's activities. Al though participation dropped off from 30 vendors to 17 this year, McClettle said it's likely to pick up with better promotion.
