2B ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT/The Charlotte Post Thursday, February 8,1996 Sounds Duke displays talents on CD Continued from IB steadfast faith. Adams is one of gospel’s premier vocalists and she shows why on this song. She pulls emotion from the bottom of her soul and delivers quite possibly the per formance of the year, possibly her career. Richard Smallwood, The Sounds of Blackness, Chosen, Armstrong and Virture also contribute songs to this fine project. Parks’ place in history has been set for decades. She will always be remembered as the lady who was tired and would n’t give up her seat. This trib ute also has its place in histo ry as a phenomenal tribute to a phenomenal lady. Bravo! George Duke, pro ducer Warner Bros. Records ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ Ge George Duke Muir Whods Suite feorge Duke’s talents seem to be boundless. He’s usually looked at as a pop/jazz produc er and musician, not a writer of orchestral pieces. Oh, but he is, and a very good one at that. Duke’s Muir Woods Suite is a wonderful col lection, no, fusion of pop, jazz and classical. It’s breathtak- ingly simple in spots and lay ered and complex in others. Overall, it’s marvelous. Duke’s prowess as a musician is nothing short of brilliant. Ditto for his skills as a com poser. He leads Stanley Clarke, Chester Thompson and Paulinho Da Costa through a musical journey based on his childhood memo ries of the Muir Woods in Marin County in California. L’orchestre National de Lille, with Ettore Stratta conducting backs the quartet throughout the seven “phases” (Duke thought the word “movement” was too formal). During the fifth phase, the orchestra actu ally assumes the lead while the jazz quartet plays the accompaniment. Have I already said Duke is brilliant? If I haven’t, he is. If I have, it bears repeating. Rating: ☆☆☆☆☆ Classic; ☆☆☆☆ Excellent; ☆☆☆ Good; ☆☆ Fair; ☆ Why?; No Stars Given - Please, Spare Us.
