BLACK HISTORY MONTH February 15, 1996 Neighborhoods center of black life in Charlotte Put Your Business In The Streets With tCJje Cljarlotte ^ojSt The Areas Best Black Media (704)376-0496 Continued From 15A Brooklyn were the Ebeneezer Baptist Church, at Davidson and Third, established in the early 1880s and Grace AME Zion, organized in 1886. In 1894, Bishop T.H. Lomax brought the national AME Zion Publishing House to Second Ward. It first stood on South College Street and later on Second and Brevard. It is currently housed on Second Street. The area around the publishing house was vital and dynamic. Only the Grace AME Zion Church, built in 1902, and the MIC Building, built in 1921 as an office building for black professionals, attest to this once-thriving community. A “colored” library built in 1903 and the home of Dr. J.T. Williams also stood on South Brevard Street. Col. Charles Young Post between First and Second Streets. First Baptist (col ored), which split from the white First Baptist Church in 1867, built a church on South Church Street in 1870. A Peabody School, partially funded by northern philan thropists, was established for black students on South Mint Street in the 1870s. St. Michael’s Training and Industrial School, under the auspices of St. Michael’s and All Angels, a black Episcopal congregation, was established in 1891. Good Samaritan Hospital, by many accounts the first privately run hospital exclusively for blacks in the United States, was organized in 1888 through the efforts of Mrs. Jane Wilkes and the Episcopal Church. It was built on South Mint Street. By the 1890s, it appears that Second Ward, also known as 168 Drum and Bugle Corps Brooklyn, became the focal point for Charlotte’s black community. In 1879-80, Second Ward’s population was 64 percent black. Black churches, businesses, and resi dences abounded in Brooklyn.
