At the Learning Immersion Centers student learning
is accelerated through an intense program focused on
the strengths of each child. Students are challenged
each day to reach their fullest potential.
At the end of the second grade, each student will be
evaluated for entrance to the Academically Gifted pro
gram. Students who do not qualify may apply with pri
ority for another magnet .or return to their assigned
school.

Academy for Medical Sciences (9-12)
The Academy for Medical Sciences offers a comprehen
sive and rigorous four-year program geared to assisting
students develop a sound pre-professional and/or pre-
technical foundation if they wish to work as medical pro
fessionals. All instruction is presented through the use of
state-of-the-art technologies. While telecommunications
technology will bring the world of medicine to the
Academy, students will experience “real life” health care
delivery as health team members within hospitals, dental
and medical offices and laboratories.
The Academically Gifted Magnet schools provide a
full-day, intensive program appropriate for identified
academically gifted students in grades three through
five. Each school offers a full-day of enriched and
accelerated educational experiences in the four major
content areas.

Academically Gifted through the CMS AG office by March 29,

Academy of Finance (9-12)
The Academy of Finance provides an academic pro
gram which focuses on a concentrated study of the finan
cial services industry. Specialized courses in finance, on-
the-job summer internships and numerous enrichment
activities give students the opportunity for an in-depth
study of financial services.
Students who enroll in the Academy of Finance study
economics, including taxation, budgeting, labor/manage
ment relations and international trade. Students have the
chance to earn college credit.

Workplace Masnet (K-6)
Phase I of the Education Village will open in
1996-97. The new complex will ultimately ,
house over 5,000 students on a campus of
two elementaries, a middle school and a
high school. Students at the school will
progress in a non-graded setting at their own ’
pace. Foreign Languages will be emphasized beginning in
elementary school. The greatest success will be achieved
by students who commit to remaining in the Village for
their entire K-12 education.
Approximately one-third of the seats will be allotted
through the magnet process as part of a workplace mag
net. Parents must provide transportation to and from the
school. A fee-based before and after school enrichment
program will be available.

Communication Arts/Academic Studies
Schools (K-11)
The Communication Arts/Academic Studies Program
offers a strong scholastic program concentrating on the
effective expression of ideas and information. Writing is
integrated throughout the curriculum; students can be
involved in producing a newspaper and in-school televi
sion broadcasts. An enriched academic program includes
a multi-cultural focus in social studies, special activities in
science and computer instruction. Visual arts, drama and
dance are integral components.
The Middle School program is a highly structured and
challenging one that concentrates on excellence in the
basic subjects and focuses on an array of communica-
tions-related curricula and activities. Using advanced
technology, emphasis will be placed on all aspects of the
media as well as creative writing. The high school
Communications Academy offers work on the technologi
cal aspects of communications.

Math/Science, Technolosy (K-12)
The Math/Science and Technology Program offers
classes in all subject areas, with specially designed classes
in the areas of mathematics, the sciences and technology
that offer students a range of options based on their acad
emic achievement and interests. Independent analysis,
critical thinking, problem solving, communications and
decision making are areas of focus for the total program.
Research skills are integrated into all facets of the acade
mic program.
Students who have successfully comoleted the elemen
tary program are automatically accented in the middle
school and may continue to the high school.

Paideia Academy (K-6)
The word Paideia (py-day-a) comes
from a Greek word that means “the
upbringing of a child.” The Paideia pro
gram is designed to encourage students
to become independent thinkers and cre
ative problem solvers. Students who
complete Oakhursfs program can contin
ue into the Paideia strand at Piedmont
Open Middle for grades 6-8.
Students in the Paideia Program experi
ence a strong core curriculum presented in
classroom environments where discussion
and debate are the rule rather than the
exception. Teachers teach through tradition
al methods as well as through seminar instruction and
coaching.
Seminar instruction, or “Socratic discussion,” is held
each Wednesday morning. Students analyze and reflect
upon great pieces of literature, art and music.
