2B ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT/The Charlotte Post Thursday, February 15,1996 Sounds Fugees CD shows diversity Continued from 1B ere it not for 2 Pac’s immense appeal, I’d pick the Fugee’s new CD to debut at No. 1 I t should. What Shakur lacks in creativi ty, the Fugees deliver and then some. The group has an odd mix of rap, old-school r&b and hip- hop that’s very appealing. Its style is hard to pin-point, giv ing it an air of exclusivity. What makes this group work is its combination of Lauryn Hill’s excellent signing voice with free-flowing rap. “FU- GEE-LA” is already a huge radio hit and may only get larger. “Zealots” uses an obscure song,” I Only Have Eyes For You,” to make a chill ing statement. The CD’s best moment is when Hill is turned loose on Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly.” She does the song supreme justice, starting slow ly, then weaving the rest of the Fugees around her glorious voice. It’s stunning work - not something you’d expect to hear on a rap CD. I’m glad it”s here. Something For The People Something For The People Fuzzy, Sauce and Cat Daady, producers Warner Bros. ☆ ☆ ☆ 1/2 Something For The People is an estab lished remix and pro duction team that’s worked with En Vogue, Brandy and A d i n a s Howard. The trio of Fuzzy, Sauce and Cat Daddy have decided to spin some hits of their own. Wise decision. This could be the party album of the year. Speaking of partying, remember last year’s “You Want This Party Started?” This is the group. The rest of the CD is a mix of dance, hip- hop and ballads done with traces of some old-school mas ters. A1 Green, Curtis Mayfield and even some Prince is evi dent on this set. Nice job, guys. Rating: Classic; Excellent; Good; Fair; it Why? No Stars Given - Please, Spare Me. SUBSCRIBE TODAY!
