Tournament tickets: Hot property Lx)oking for tickets to black college basketball tournaments? Well, you're in luck. With less than two weeks to go before three of the four black college conference tourneys kick off, tickets are still available. CIAA Ticket availability is hot news in the CIAA for sure, where tournament sellouts are the norm. Conference Business Manager, Martha Marcolini reports that as of Feb. 12, there were still a limited number of upper level books available for the $85 asking price. Individual game and session tickets are sold at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum, site of the tournament for the last four years. "Weexpectasellout," said Marcolini, who described sales as brisk. SIAC The oldest black college tournament has moved this year to Alabama A&M's 6,500 seat capacity Elmore Health Science Building for one year before going to the new Columbus (Ga.) Civic Center next year. MEACToumament Manager Brenda McCoy says ticket sales are not where the conference had Alabama State University Photo ON-CAMPUSTOURNEYS: Three ofthefour black conference basketball tournaments will be played in whole or in part at on-campus facilities. The Joe L. Reed Acadome, on the campus of Alabama State University, will host the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament March 6-9. MEN'S OUTLOOK Few league titles decided as races enter final weeks Just when you thought it was safe to name the favorites for the black college conference basketball tourmaments, a rash of upsets and unexpected outcomes have muddied the waters. The start of the black college tournament season is less than two short weeks away and it appears most regular season races will go down to the wire. The Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament is nearly three weeks away and will be previewed next week. mmmm Virginia Union(19-l,9-1),ranked#! inthe NCAA Div. II poll last week, suffered their first defeat of the season at Norfolk State Feb. 5. Still coach Dave Robbins' Panthers can claim their ninth consecutive Northern Division title, and Alabama A&M Sports Photo GOODMAN; Leads Alabama A&M's bid to retu rn to Elite Eight. the first round tournament bye that goes with it, with a win at Elizabeth City Feb. 13. Big Ben Wallace, the Panther's 6-9 center, leads the conference in blocks (3.8 per game), is second in rebounding (9.5 per game) and fifth in field goal percentage (.545). Norfolk State (17-3,7- 2) is ineligible for NCAA post season play because of their impending move to Div. I, but can break Va. Union's stranglehold on the regular season crown with a little help. As usual, the Panthers (63.8) and Spartans (68.4) rank one-two in scoring defense. Elizabeth City (5-2,14-9) played Union tough before losing 55-22 in overtime two weeks ago and then handed North Carolina Central their only CIAA defeat (83-80) Feb. 10. A win over Union (Feb. 13) would not only throw the N. Div. race into a tizzy but would give the Vikings momentum headed into the tournament. Despite the loss to Eliz. City, N. C. Central (10-0,18-2) has clinched the Southern Division title and the first round tournament bye. Guard Levelle Moton leads the Eagles with a 21.4 points per game average. MEAC South Carolina State (10-1,15-6) and Coppin State (9-1,12-8) are headed for a showdown next week for the MEAC crown. Both have one conference loss. Coppin lost to Howard (5-6, 6-15) and South Carolina State fell to Bethune-Cookman (5-7,9-12). Coppin, who may havethe player of the year in 6-8 center Terquin Mott, has won the regular season championship for three consecutive years (See UNDER THE BANNER). The Eagles travel to Orangeburg Feb. 19 before returning to host the Bulldogs on Feb. 22. S. C. State has rallied behind coach Cy Alexander, deposed during last year's tournament because of questions regarding a player's eligibility. It's another three games back to third place where tourney-dangerous North Carolina A&T (6-4,8- 11) lurks. SIAC After running out to a quick lead in the SIAC East, Clark (9-4,13- 8) has been overtaken by Albany State (9-3,13-8). Their meeting Feb. 12 could determine the outcome of the divisional race. ASU is led by Irvin Jocey (19.1 ppg). William Burr leads Clark with a 19.2 average. Savannah State fell out of the running with two losses last week. In the West, Alabama A&M has moved out to a nearly insurmountable 4 1/2 game lead over LeMoyne Owen (8-4,12-6). The Bulldogs, two time defending Western Division and conference champs made it to the NCAA Div. II Elite Eight a year ago. Guard Deatrus Goodman leads the conference in scoring at 19.9 points and is also tops in steals at 2.7 per game. hoped but said "we're very optimistic" that the new site will bring satisfactory results. SWAC Still nearly three weeks away, the SWAC affair will be held at the Reed Acadome on the campus of Alabama State University. Commissioner James Frank was unavailable for comment at press time. BCSP HOOP TOP TEN 1. VIRGINIA UNION - Overtime loss at Norfolk State but still on top. 2. ALABAMA A&M (19-2) • Two games this week without a loss. 3. NORFOLK STATE (17-3) - Knocked off Va. WOMEN'S OUTLOOK Women's races heat up as conference tourneys near ERIC MOORE BCSP Co-Editor Women's races have begun to tighten as teams jockey for position entering the final week before three of the four black college conference basketball tournaments. CIAA Norfolk State’s Spartanettes have wrapped up their sixth straight Northern Division title. Coach James Sweat also picked up his 200th career win at Norfolk State and 385th overall as NSU completed another un defeated week with wins over Vii^inia Union, St. Paul’s and Virginia State. Junior forward LaTina Bullock (23.7 ppg) and | \^j | center Michelle Sessoms (16.6 p, 11.7 rpg) lead the Spartanettes. Bowie State, Virginia A r FAMU Sports Photo ROBINSON; FAMU star class of MEAC Stateand Virginia Union are jockeying for second position. One of the closest races in conference history is taking place in the CIAA Southern Division. Surprising Winston-Salem State holds aslim one- game lead over Shaw and Fayetteville State. Junior swing player Chellia Nelson (20.8 ppg) leads a young WSSU squad that features seven freshmen and only two seniors. Shaw may be in the best position to claim its second straight Southern Division title. Coach Bobby Sanders’ Lady Bears handed Norfolk State its only loss of the season two weeks ago and are only down one game in the loss column with just two divisional games to play. All- CIAA forward Stephanica Greer (20.3 ppg, 10.3 rpg) leads the Shaw attack. Fayetteville State controls its own destiny with games against Shaw, SL Augustine’s and Winston-Salem State still remaining. MEAC The Rattierettes of Florida A&M (12-0,18-4) made a significant move toward clinching their second straight regular season championship with a con vincing 71 -65 win over second place Howard (9-2,13-8) last week. The Ratterlerettes have won 15 straight following a 90-65 drubbing from cross town foe, Florida State back in December. Cathy Robinson is the team leader averaging 20.4 points per game and perhaps the loop’s best player. SIAC Fort Valley State is on its way to another SIAC Eastern Region Championship with the best overall record in the conference and a convincing 75-61 win over second place Clark Atlanta last Saturday. The Lady Wildcats are led by senior guard and All-SI AC performer Natoshia Williams averaging 17.8 points per game. Alabama A&M is in the driver’s seat for another West Region crown. The Lady Bulldogs lead the slumping second place Kentucky State Thorobrettes by two games entering the final two weeks of the season. m mm
