One of the library’s first efforts to docu ment African American histo ry in Charlotte is “An African American Album: The Black Experience,” a peek into the past through photos submit ted by Charlotte residents. The album, which was first published in 1992, is chock full of gems from the days before Charlotte officially outlawed segregation in public facilities, education and housing. Photographs depicting home life, religion and education paint a fond portrait of a time long past. A second album is in the works, detailing life from the 1950s forward. Another gem is “Plum Thickets and Field Daisies,” Rose Leary Love’s memoirs of life in the Brooklyn communi ty. Love, a long-time teacher and community leader, was a huge figure in the black com munity before the term role model became popular.
