Charlotte-Mecklenburg has
the area’s premier collections
of photographs and books
detailing the black experience
in Charlotte. One of the
library’s first efforts to docu
ment African American histo
ry in Charlotte is “An African
American Album: The Black
Experience,” a peek into the
past through photos submit
ted by Charlotte residents.
The album, which was first
published in 1992, is chock full
of gems from the days before
Charlotte officially outlawed
segregation in public facilities,
education and housing.
Photographs depicting home
life, religion and education
paint a fond portrait of a time
long past. A second album is in
the works, detailing life from
the 1950s forward.
Another gem is “Plum
Thickets and Field Daisies,”
Rose Leary Love’s memoirs of
life in the Brooklyn communi
ty. Love, a long-time teacher
and community leader, was a
huge figure in the black com
munity before the term role
model became popular. Love,
who died in 1969, recounts her
memories of life in Brooklyn
