game back, Bolden had 24 points and

5-7) beat Southern 86-81 Feb. 17. It
was the Tigers first win since his re

and his parents talked over the situation with him. Obviously
that was done though no details on the nature of the problem
have been released. TSU's probation will keep them out of the
SWAC basketball tournament and any other conference
championships this year.
THE INSIDE TRACK: The Mid Eastern
Athletic Conferencewill hold its annual Men's and Women's
Indoor Track Championships Feb. 24 and 25 at the
Greensboro (NC) Coliseum Special Events Center. Florida
A&M Unvierslty swept both men's and women's titles a
year ago defeating the Coppin State men 129-80 and
edging the women of North Carolina A&T 90-87.

Developments prompt changes
in basketball tourney formats

Check the schedules before you head
out to your favorite black college
basketball tournament over the next two
weeks. If not, you could be in for some
big surprises.
For example: Don't arrive at 9:00
am for the start of the CIAA tournament's
opening round on Feb. 26 (Women) or
Feb. 28 (Men). If you do you may be
there by yourself.
Hampton's defection from the
CIAA to the MEAC has ruined the slogan
"Fourteen of the Finest." There are only
13 CIAA schools now.
Prior to this year the two division
champions (North and South) received
first round byes while the remaining six
schools played on the tournament's
opening days. This year, to compensate
for Hampton's loss, an additional bye
will be awarded to the second place team
with the best conference record. So
instead of six games on the two opening
days, there are five — starting at 11 am.
In the MEAC tournament, Morgan
State is serving the first year of a three-
year NCAA probation that makes their
men and women ineligible
for the tournament.
Hampton entered the
conference too late to play
a full conference schedule so
they are also not in this year's
get-together. That means only
eight men's and women's teams will travel to
Tallahassee for the four-day affair. No play-
in games are necessary.
The SIAC tournament takes on a new
flavor with the addition of Kentucky
State to the conference. For the men, the top
two teams get berths while the bottom four
teams play for two spots in each region.
The women's tournament takes on
an even different flavor. Because
Morehouse (an all-mens institution) has
no women's team, the West Region's top
three teams advance to the tourney while
the bottom two play for the fourth spot.
The SWAC tournament is another
week away but don't look for Texas
Southern's men or women, nor Alcorn
State's men. The probation bug has bit
both programs. TSU, last year's champ,
could return next year (if they meet NCAA
requirements) while the Braves have anther
year to go on their suspension.
CIAA has a little extra ...
When it comes to extra-hoopicular activities, the Central Intercollegiate
Athletic Association (CIAA) tournament Is the hands down winner.
During a week (Feb. 26 - March 2) in which three of the four biack coliegc
basketball tournaments are played, the fun and good times off the court seem to be
in Winston-Salem, NC host of the CIAA for the third consecutive year.
Not only will the basketball be outstanding, but a long list of activities promises
to delight both young and old.
The CIAA Tip-Off Banquets will have distinguished speakers to gel the balls
hooping. North Carolina Congresswman Eva Clayton, keynotes the women's tip-
off Feb. 25, while newly elected NAACP President and former Congressman,
KwesI Mfume, takes the podium at the men's affair Feb. 27. Sandwiched between
six days of around the clock hoop action are a High School Day, a Fashion Show,
a Cheerleading Exhibition, an Old Timers Game, a step - I should say Stompfest -
- and the always-entertaining Coca Cola Road Trip, a travelling fun extravaganza.

SWAC teams should battle to the finish
BASKETBALL THIS WEEK
After jumping out to a 7-0 start
through the end of January, Mississippi
Valley (9-3,18-6) has fallen back into ’
the pack in SWAC men's conference
wars. Despite the efforts of SWAC
Player-of-the Year candidate, Marcus
Mann (21.6 points and 13.2 rebounds
per game), a 2-3 record in the month of
February has caused the Delta Devils'
once comfortable lead to evaporate.
Jackson State (9-3, 13-12) has
moved into a tie for first place with
MVSU thanks to an overtime 81-79
win over the Delta Devils last Saturday
in Itta Bena. JSU's 5-0 February has
been led by Titus Hooten
(15.6 ppg) and Trent Pullium
(7.9 boards pergame).Pullium
has also blocked 31 shots this
year.
Lurking in third place is
Southern (8-4, 14-9) who
might have shared the
conference lead had they not
lost to Texas Southern last

ranked in SWAC scoring. Janette
Graham is second in the league at 17.0
ppg while Shiakee Carter is averaging
11.8 points per contest. Alcorn's Lady
Braves rely on LeCuria Fillers (15.0
ppg, 8.8 rpg) while Jackson State looks
to last year's Rookie of the Year Rosalyn
Spann (17.6 ppg, 6.8 boards per
contest).

The battle for MEAC
supremacy will come down to two
games this week between Coppin
State (12-1,15-8) and S. C. State
(12-l,17-6)Feb.l9andFeb.22. If
the teams split then they will be
declared co-champions and a point
deferential in head-to-head
competition will determine
tournamment seeding.
Coppin has the nation's longest
home court winning streak at 39
games, while S. C. State has won
12 straight at home.
It appears Norfolk State (18-
4,8-2) will get the third bye for the
CIAA men's tournament by virtue
of their second place N. Div. finish
and best record among runners-ups.
Southern sweeps
Southern University swept
both men's and women's SWAC
Indoor Track Champtionship in
Fort Worth, Texas.
The Southern men finished
with 114 points to easily
outdistance Alabama State (47).
The Southern women had 128.2
points to outscore Grambling
106.3.
Junior Chris Freeman of
Southern scored 22 points and was
named men's most outstanding
track performer. Donald Driver
of Alcorn State scored 28 points
to earn the outstanding field
performer award. Janice Nelson
of Southern was named the
outstanding female track athlete.
